BEGINNERS' GOLF.

THE BEST GAMÉ

There is probably one, and only one, stage of a golfer's existence when he is blithely indifferent to cause and effect. Thas delectable period is centred around the time he makes his first purchase of clubs, bag, balls, and so on, and sallies forth on some course, public or private, it matters not, to tempt fate. At aneh a time any shot is magnified in his eyes as a good one; every yard the ball travels causing more or less delight.

The beginner at golf is the, only one who can really enjoy the game. The links world is surfeited with book on golf, and whole chapters are, devoted to telling

How to drive" and How to put, what clubs" to buy and where to buy them, what balls to purchase, what to wear and when to play, ad "najiseum, It seems a never-ending output and is all designed to lure the player along that. fatal path which leady him away from the only true game-the, beginner's.

Once the novice is persuaded to pursue what he yalaly imagines, as proficiency his peace of mind is gone forever. "The innocent lights of his golfing adoles scence is forever lost. He becomet-merely one of a huge and ver-growing crowd which sees nothing in the game but the reduction of handicap.

HE GETS THE LIMIT..

Directly a novice joins a clib he is persuaded to place himself in charge.of a professional. He spends hours endea vouring to drive, then he is put to the next weapon of offence, only to End. when he has grasped the intricacies that The he has forgotten how to drive. poor" wretch alternates betwren, hope and despair, and evenmaily the pitying. handicap comunittee turns a blind eye on his cars and put him to the mit mark.

This, if he but realized it, is the beginning of the end. Thenceforth he His home is 15 golfing nonomaniac. but useum of discarded clubs and his knowledge of the vagaries of golf balls is profound. His only ambition in life is to get his Handicap reduced, and as a long intervals he painfully his succeeds in accomplishing this, wretchedness is only intensified. He is the drugged victim of the handicap habit.

NOTHING LIKE IT..

There is nothing in the world to "qual the beginner's joys. He never blames the clabs, the wind, his ball. or the luck- of the Innocent as yet of the excuses which are really accusations, he takes his luck as he finds it. He loves the game, for its own sake and the health it brings him. He is invaribly cheerful; always going to du better next time. He has no handicap to live up to.

Cheerfulness in, golf, as in everything else, is the greatest essential to enjoy went of gwne. Golf secnis anything else. A happy way of looking at things is. altogether invaluable. The man who goes on the course with good cheer in high heart and meets every obstacle in that nanner, will soon cut down his handicap, regardless of whether it goes from 18 to 35 or from to scratch.

THE HEALTHY CHILD,"

DANGER OF PUNISHMENTS OVER FOOD

A child who leads a healthy life, has a wholesome diet, no food between meals, and who has been, taught to masticate, is not in any great danger of over-eating," id Dr. Margaret Grace Thackrab, lecturing at the Food Exhibition at Olympia, London, his month.

All the strain in connection with school examinations came when rapid physical hd emotional development was taking place, she said. One way to guard against mishap was by good feeding, Many health boys of twelve and thirteen afe as much as an average man, and from fourteen to nineteen they ate more. In consideration of the large part which athletics played in the life of boys and girls, i was important that school authorities should pay special attention to sufficient dict.

Regarding the ordinate liking for sugar on the part of us children, the lecturer advocated the old-fashioned plun of giving a child a weekly income of oue penay or twopence, and allowing him to spend it, if he wished un-sweets

Then

be would hardly manage to poison him- self with carbohyrates, and would get a correct idea of the place of swiers in life's freonomy.

Scoldings and punishments in eonuce tion with food should be Figorously avoided, and there should never be a forcing of food down with recriminations, for that way lay nervous indigestion. A child's food should be selected with care, bus young children should not be asked. ta chons their food; they "should take what was prepared without questioning. Special treats should be. left to such ex- ternal ageals as uncles, aunts," and Christmas parting.
