On the previous day 24 men were charged and of these six were discharged

IT-PAYS TO TELL THE TRUTH.
AN ILLUSTRATION AT THE MAGISTRACY.
If Hau Hing, a licenced cinder collector, hail admitted" the true facts of a case to his solicitor, Mr. REA. Webeter, it is quite probable that the Magistrate (Mr. ** Lindsell) would not have sent him to prizon for one month, but would have given him the option of a fine.
The charge preferred against the than w the unlawful possession of 80 worth of anal The defendant's story to the solicitor was that a man came to his cinder fard and sold him a quantity of ooal: Whilst the bargain was being made the police appeared on the scene and the man who brought the coal to him ande good his escape in a boat, leaving the defendant as the scapegoat baby The Magistrate Your statement, Mr. Webster, amcants to a plea of Not guilty
Mr Webster said his client admitted possession of the coal, but that he had no guilty knowledge: PLEDGE
The Magistrate decided to hear the cake and a Flakong stated while her was patrolling the fore-shore at Tai Kok Teme a commotion occurred amongst some boater people on his approachs The defendant became very panicky and tried to evado arrest by jumping into the har bour,
pair. Wobster: 1 was not told i thin
In reply to Mr Webster's application for a fine, the Magistrate said he would have been quite prepared to grant this if the defendant had admitted the whole facts of the story.
