NOTICE TO CONSIGNEES.

UNITED KINGDOM, GENOA,

PORT SAID & STRAITS.^

We do not, as a rule, hear very much about what the Navy is doing until the FROM job is done. This may truly be said of the remarkable and unique vessel which has been built at H. M. Dockyard, Chatham, and has just completed a series of success.THE Steamahin ful tests. We are aware, of course, that the Navy possesses certain special vessels termed seaplane carriers, of which the old Cunarder. Campania was one of the first, being converted at Messrs. Chmwell Laird's for this purpose; and that later HMS. Engle was built and completed at

Messrs. Beardmore's for the express use of seaplanes the decks being specially de signed and constructed for the landing and launching of such aircraft.

The By beats, however, demandal sque thing different. Their hulls are of, such size and construction that it is generally inadvisable if not impossible for them to "land" or take off from anything but a water surface. The problem then was to provide means for docking woh fragile. Vessels so that the underwater portione could be conveniently got at for repairs and overhaul A special Boating dock was therefore designed by, and built under the personal supervision of Mr. I. H. Narbeth, C.B.E., one of the chief construc- tors of the "Admiralty.

In general appearance this floating dock is like the forward half of a tramp steuner, lopped off short amidships and the after portion removed. 'Iler, high forecastle help to provide the necessary buoyancy when the floor of the dock is submerged. The sidopoyancy tanks are low bulwarks, which Bru cut down 30 this to clear the lower planes of the flying boat when the hull is in dock." The

after part of the vessel is formed so

that the floor of the dock is carried flash right out, and there are longitudinal rails or akids at the centre line to guide the Hoating flying boat into position. Two adjustable crudies are then gently brought into use to steady the flying boat as the "dock" is pumped out and the whole mass raised to the required height. The com. plets operation takes less than a quarter of

hair, Fight platforms inside the bal warks give ready access to the various parts of the flying boat,

"PEMBROKESHIRE" having arrived from the above ports, Con- nigueen of Cargo by her are hereby informed that all Goods are being landed at their risk into the hazardous andjor extra hazardona downs of The Hongkong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Compsay, Limited,

The tips of the planes overhang the sides of the dock by thirty or forty feet, and altogether it is just about as queer a combination as one could imagine. Of the utility of the lock there can be no question, and as the flying boat for strictly naval purposes is an established type, floating docks such as described will be necessary at the Lases where such aircraft are to operate.

"STRIKES OF NO USE,"

MR. GOSLING HAS MORE FAITH IN THE BALLOT-BOX.

"An analysis of the industrial position since the Armistice will prove that none of the strikes that have taken place bas bore useful or tangible results to the working class."

Mr. Harry Gosling made this outspoken statement in his presidential address to the delegates to the National Transport Workers' Federation at the opening of their annual conference at Cardiff on June 8th. He added

All claims must be presented within ten days of the Steamer's arrival here after which data they cannot be recognized.

No claims will be admitted after the goods have left the Godown.
