THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS,

THE SERBIAN ROYAL WEDDING.

FICTURESQUE CUSTOMS.

A correspondent to The Times writes:- Strict adherence to national tradition will be the keynote for the ceremonies of the Royal wedding in Belgrade, [The wedding | had been fixed for June lat, but was post- poned to June 8th, owing to the illness of the Duchess of Sparta. When King | Alexander's briße and her parents disem- bark at the Sara Quay, the Star pledge of amity, bread and salt, will be offered to King Ferdinand on a golden salver by the Magor, while boogiets are presented to the Queen and to Princess Mario.

There will be m bridesmaids; but hundreds of young girls, dressel'in white and carrying dowers, will form a guard of honour on either side as the bride enters the Cathedral on the wedding morning. After the bridal couple, the most important personages at a Serbian marriage are the Koom (sponsor)-on this occasion the Duke of York; tho Dev (knight attendant on the bride), usually a relative of the groomi and the Star Seat (literally, wedding expert), who is the general master of eare monies. Thus it will be seen there is, no best man in the English sense of the word, as the Kun is the most honoured guest is function at the church is to stand with the Stari Sport."behind the bridal pair and to hold aloft the wedding crowns over their heads. The Decer is tobluff to wait on the bride, he escorts her to the church, relieves her of her bou- quet, holds her gloves, and protects her in the wedding crab,"

Fine lined scarves, originally destined to decorate their horses' necks, are distributed to the guests. A specially beautiful speci me handwoven with gold thread has been reserved for the Duke of York.

The most trying ordeal of the bride, begins on her return from church, when she alights in front of her new home. Princess Marie has declared that she will be delighted" to full all the prescriber observancer. She will stop over a band of cloth extended between the gateposts. It represents the crossing of the ancient moat, and is symbolical of the separation of her now life from the old. Next she will take a sieve filled with wheat and sugar to be flung by her in handfuls to all corners of the courtyard. In former times a bride followed this by throwing the sieve itself right over the roof of her new domicile, but the height of the Palace in Belgrade makes this impossible. The new Queen, will then approach the palace door bearing a leaf and a flask of wine, symbolical of the joy and plenty that whe brings to her bushand. Her final task is to lift up and embrace a child, on whom ahe bestows a garment of her own making, The infant son of a peasant from Topola birthplace of the great Kara-George, the founder of the dynasty--has been selected. for this honour.

SODA WATER SPRING,

EXPLOITING A HAPPY FREAK OF

"NÁTURE.

If you want to see soda-water spouting from the earth in a fountain you must come to Glinton, says the Daily Netr

In this little Northamptonshire village, lying a few miles out from Peterborough, there has been discovered the only natural soda spring in the world. Nature, in a freakish fit of hospitality, invites you to have a "splash" with her-not a mere split," or a battleful, but gallons of it. She throws soda water about as recklessly as one might splash lath water.

Round the fountain bas, ben built a miniature grotta, fashionel of quartz rock and beautiful with palms, in the middle of which the ring gushes up through 68ft. of solid rock. Crystal us Castalia, it dances in a broad jet to a height of 6ft and tumbles merrily in the foaming rocks. Dip a glass in the spring, and you bring it out icy-cold, and full of a clear, aenited liquid

1. The discovery of this strange natural phenomenon was made quite accidentally. some years ago, when the Peterborough Corporation was drilling for water to supply the town.

Four bores were sunk. Three of the springs proved to be hard water, and the other was soři. It was noticed, how- ever, that the soft water would not blond with the hard, but caused a curicus com- motion, and turned a strange milky white. Owing to there properties the soft water spring was seated down.

Recently Mr. L. Nesverson, a resident of Peterborough, bought the property on which the spring stands and had ita water tested by leading London aoúlysts, who reported that Nature had supplied England with a mineral water superior to any foreign variety.

It does not require to be filtered, is sparkling, clean to taste, and as different from ordinary water as a vintage champagne | is from ordinary wine.

"Binee then Mr. Neavorson has sunk 18′′ wells in the neighborhood, but has not been able to tap the supply at any other point. No one can explain the presence of the spring at Glinton, but it is coa- jectured that there must be a narrow sub- terranean river of soda-water flowing under the ground, sad probably drawing ite chemical properties from higher ground 30 or. 40 miles away,

Mr. Neavorson has formed a company to bottle the water, and it will shortly be offered to the public. It is estimated "that | 40,000 bottles can be filled at the spring per day.

-

Bir Harold Mackintosh, of toffee fame, Sir Charles Higham, M.P., and Major Peter Thomas are interested in the spring.
