LADIES GOLF CHAMPION-

SHIP.

WONDERFUL GOLF BY MISS

WETHERED. »»

Miss Cecil Leitch was bentes on thi Prince's links at Sandwich on May 15th, by nice holes up and seven to play by

iss Joyce Wethered in the final round of the competition for the Ladies' Golf Championship. Miss Leitch was Cham- pion in 1914, 1820, and 1021.

The conditious in which this final round were played were not good, for there was a very strong wind and the light was not good. Yet the golf played by Miss Wethered was wonderful in its strength and securacy. The first eighteen boirs were closely contested, and at the end of the frat round Miss Wethered was only one hele up. In the afternoon round, however, alias Wethered was much the better player, and it was soon obvious that, unless her play suddenly cracked.. Aliss Wethered was certain to win. Miss, Leitch was not at her best in the after- noon round, and was probably feeling. the effects of her accident in America last year, but at the same time, it must be admitted that she would have had to play better golf than even she has ever doce to have won on that day, 7

Mis Wethered is a very worthy Cham pion, and a worthy successor to one of the greatest lady players of all time? The possible meeting of these two fue lady players in the English Ladies' Close Championship this season, and in thes Ladies Open Championship of next year will be awaited with great interest,

MANNERS AT THE LADIES'

· BRIDGE-TABLE.

-ཅ-1x--

FRON LONDON "Pats Culosivna.".

One of the times at which even the most habitually courteous and kindly people are [often incline! to show irritation and unreasonable contention is at the bridge luble

Self-control and coolness in the fee of I losing olds urë very important traits to be

cultivated by the bridge player.

Whether a player has merelyonsented ti "make up a four" for lack of another, or lus arranged beforehand to play, she slinkt bring a gracious and sympathetic manner to the table, and do berst to give ber three companions a good rubber. The atmosphere of sincerity and affability whe diffuses will affect the whole party.

Nervous actions, such as tapping with the fingers on table, while waiting for others to play, fidgeting with a necklace, humming, and hooking about the room and away from the game, are most annoying and distracting to the other players.

Inattention show lack of manners. There are some people who, during the playing of nearly every hand, puuse when their turh comes and inquire. What are trumps? I've forgotten." Others constantly play out of their ture. ask who put down, which ard, and whether they should phy from their ow hand or “bimmy's.",

"Dummy" ought not to rise from her seat and fuspect the cards of the others, as reany people do. It is her business to sit quietly watching while the hand is played, and allow her attention to wander elsewher Above all, she should not carry on conversation with adyou in the vicinity, and a disturb the concentration of her partner and opponents.

No player woabf, of course, think of conveying, by glane or remark, informa tion to her partner regarding the cards abe holds, but some lures tiresome habit of interpolating, exclamations of surprise, triumph, aangyane, or even accusation levelled against their partner, which is nevesary and distracting, as well as often a partial betrayal of their position to their opponents.

It is a mistake, when having the misfor tune to be cast with an indifferent partner, to show feelings of injury. That unfortunat person will probably become confused and play wildly, für below her usual standard," if she realises you attitude. Smiling sympathy and encouragement are far more likely to induce careful play.

The fact that bridge is played as a pastime is frequently forgotten, and the post- mortem inquiries held while points are added up are sometimes in the nature of mutual recrimination, dially between the losing partners. All have done their best, und controversy will not alter the

score.
