GERMANY'S LATE NAVY, WAR LOSSES REVEALED IN OFFICIAL RECORD.
Throughout the war Germany tools great pains to conecal the exact sum of her casualties. naval no less than military, writes a special correspondent of Lingil', | Shipping Gazette. Only those losses that were to pateat to te hidden were al nitted, the others being carefully sup pressed. The concealment or minimising of camalties, is, of course, a perfectly legitimate artifice of war and one, indeed, which is almost invariably preţined. It has the twofold object of keeping the public at home in gol hart mud of de eiving the enemy, During the late war, however, the British Admiralty took the inconventional course of publishing--with one exception-every masal loss as it ccurred. The exception was the sinking of H.MIS. Audacions, which was kept from the public at the direct request of the Commander-in-Chief Grand Fleer, for weighty reasons since explaine),

occurred in circumstances unfavourable to concealment, and were therefore known AGENTS for Hongkong- during the war. What was certainly not known, at any rate to the general public, was the terrible bavoe that was going on among Germany's torpedo craft and auxiliaries. The tables published in the Taschenbuch show that 81 German des- troyers were sunk by enemy action- that is to say, about 15 more than our own losses in this type. The total is astonishing in view of the fact that, whereas British destroyers were constantly engaged in hazardous duties in every naya! theatre of war, spending nearly the whole of their time at sea; the German boats were kept mainly on the defensive, and only rarely used for aggresive operations. Incidentally, these tables are a significant commentary on
the German bulletins which were issued riber the several, en- counters that took place between German destroyers and our own, and which almost always stated that our boats returned safely to harbour."

German losses incurred through mines. Complaints were often beard during the war about the supposed ineffectiveness of our mines as compared with the German type, but here we see a very different picture. Mine explosions caused the destruction of the following German vessels --Three cruisers, 49 destroyers, 36 submarines, and well over 100 auxiliary craft.
Upwards of 200 German submarines were destroyed during the war-about 180 in action and the remainder by their own crew" to prevent capture. Twenty were torpedoed and sunk by British sub- marines, thus disproving the pre-war belief Eat submarines cannot fight submarines." The other losses were due to ganfire, rum- ning depth charges, or aerial tombs, while a few boats were lost by the accidental de- tomation of their own mines.
AUXILIARY FLEET WIPED OUT.
Of the auxiliary cruisers and other large: mercantile vessels commissioned for war duties, nearly all came to grief. The Cap Trafalgar Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, Meloor, Leopard, Greif, Konigin Luine, serving as armed cruisers, "were destroyed in action, and many others were shipwreck- ed, interned, or voluntarily cuttled. Actual war losses among these and other subsidiary vessels may be tabulated as followe
