IN THE DAIL EIREANN.

THE NEW PRESIDENT'S WRATH.

The mail brings the full reports of the proceedings in the Dail Eireann when Mr. Arthur Griffiths was elected Presi- dent.

The following is an interesting extract from the report:—

When the Dail ressembled in the after- noch all the Republican members were in their places.

Mr. De Valera åt once rose, and, address- ing Mr. Arthur Grifth, the new Presi dant asked for a declaration of policy from him. He said he appreciated "the responsibilition of Mr. Grifith's new posi biga, and he would do nothing to obstruct him so long as ho upheld the authority of the Irish Republic. But if he in any capacity did anything to subvert the re- public it would be the duty of him (Mr. Do Valera) to oppose him.

Mr. Griffith expressed appreciation of the manner in which Mr. De Valera had referred to his responsibility, and said that his policy was to do the best he could for the Irish people. He repeated that bis policy was to allow the Dail to re- main in existence until the Irish people decided what they wanted at the election. All be asked was not to ba obstructed. If the Irish people at a free election without any force being used on either aide say, "No, we won't have a Free State, we will have a republic,' I will have a republic,' I will follow in the ranka."

MR. GRIFFTTH AND MR. CHILDERS.

Mr. Erskine Childers then rose to nak Mr. Griffith to explain his policy more specifically, when a deputy asked if Mr. Uhilders was in order.

Suddenly Mr. Griffith sprang to his

FREEMASONRY.

A YEAR'S GROWTH.

There has been a phenomenal growth of Freemasonry under the United Grand Lodge of England during 1991. During the official year 178 new lodges were crented, their registers ranging from No 4,179 to No. 4,350 inclusive, which is a marked increase on any past return. Going no further back than the war period (which saw a large growth of Free- masonry), it will be found that the year 1015 had seventeen new lodges; 1916. twenty-seven 1017 thirty-three 1918, eighty-two; 1010, 199 and 1920, 148:
