TRADE AT WUCHOW AND
NANNING.
Mr. S. Wyatt-Smith, until recently H.M. Coneul at Wuchow, where he was stationed for 18 months, and previous to that at Tsinaniu, Shaninog, is at present in this country on leave.
He states that trade at Wuchow, and Sancing is in the bands of the Chinese th the exception of the Asiatic Patroleum Lo.'s and Britian-American Tobacco Co.'s interests. Importe of piece goods nie fairly plentiful, and are made through Chinese merchants at Hongkong. The Chinese have as yet nes much use for other Western, manufactured goods. Wuchow was recently equipped with an electric Tight plant, and the contract for the wachinery was obtained in China "by an American merchant firm on behalf of American manufacturers. It seems, added Mr. Wyatt-Smith, that a British firm in China, acting on behalf of another at home, ran the Americans very close a regards the securing of this contract,
