UNHAPPY MARRIAGES AND DAUGHTERS IN REVOLT.

[BY MASUJIRO HONDA, Lub,1'

A noble lady has married a mining millionaire so illiterate and unrefined that she writes volume after volume of poetry to give vent to her sorrow. Their marriage was arranged, according to our traditional formality, by a new peer who is noted tur bis dnancial abilities. From the fact that the unfortunate peeress'a parental house is one of those kept pe- marious by our funeral system, wo' may safely infer that this marriage was an economie one. The cultured lady was in love with a young and refined peer be fore her present marriage, and being. Both Buddhist and human in the extreme, her yorses pour out alternately a pidus resignation to her destiny and yamenings after the man of her heart. The complete illiteracy of the husband tuches the fatter possible-n fact that adds to her. sadnews of the whole situation. Be is re- puted to be so unedugated that, after the wife had told him to say?" delicious " (oishii) at a dinner party instead of **hies" (umai), he spoke of a play being palatable (also oishii at a theatre! Tha public no doubt sympathetise, with the lady but no one has yet offered any sola- tion whatever for this problem.

A MINISTER'S RE-MARRIAGE.

On the other hand the Prese criticised, favourably or otherwise, the second mar riage of Mr. Takonami, Home Minister, Inst year which took place only a few mouths after the dead of his first wife.

The present writer luns a copy befire him of hiụ “ In Memoriam publicum entitled Tamu- kegus, which Mr. Tokenami pays the high tribute of a perly widowed man to his much-missed wife. Both in prose and poetry he recalls that he was almost heart-broken. No one who knew him per. sonally would question his fidelity to the fira wile, when, ho, solemnized or an

nounced his second wedding before the spirit (or ashes) of the deceased. What was really questioned was whether or not a second marriage of such a prominent man, kol soon after the death of the first wife was a good example for his country-] on to follow. This question can be answered only when the problems of"mar- riage, remarriage and divorce are solved on new vital principles of human rela tions, but not on worn-out dogmas or stereotyped traditions.

HORROWS OF A NOBLE FAMILY.

The death of Count Yoshikawa,-I mes tion his name with the deepest sympathy and sorrow, for his son, and bein, since doad, had been in my care in his boyhood. days brought back once more of the public notier the old story of the un his Reseries fortunate misconduct of

heiress, and the consequent severance of parental relations (gizetsu) with her. After the death of his hei, the noble 1 father adopted a young peer to marry thei heiress. This resulted in the birth off an heiress; after which the Countess-that- would be went wrong and is now living in Yokohama.. with a second servant, the first one having died alone in an attempt: at double suicide. The dying old gentle man could not possibly sny, according to the Samurai rules of propriety, that te wanted to see the once denounced daugh ter while he was alive. Neither could the daughter force her way to the sick room of her father, for she herself bad been ill for some time The papers re ported that the Count in his last momente silently watched the coming and going of have visitors, among whom he must hoped against hope to find the daughter wishing to bid him farewell. She cried bitterly on hearing the news of her father's death. remarriages or not; his young heiress will become a countess in due time by martying a gentleman adopt- ed into the Yoshikawa family.
