The principal change in the Local Code is that the new signals will show the direction from which the gais la expected, whereas the old signals showed the poai- tion of the typhoon. The latter will be indicated, as heretofore, by the non-local- signals. The new Local Code is given below:

The object of the code is to give si Isai 24 hours warning of a gale (Foros 8 by Beaufort Scale, or 40-45 m.p.b., menn velocity by Dines Anemometer) and allo warnings of expected › changes in the direction and fores of the wind. Owing, however, to the uncertain moramenta of typhoons and to insufficient telegraphie observations, it will occasionally happra that signals to may be displayed without gale occurring at Hongkong, or even Gap Rock, but the reverse is not likely to happen, except in the case of typhoons forming in the vicinity súd of a located, typhoon increasing its rate travelling rapidly towards Hongkong, or
