spiracy Again referring to the opium market at the time, Mr. Patter said that Chinese, and people of other nationalities in the Colony bought opium at a margin, held out for the rise, hoped it would rise, and speculated accordingly. The whole foundation of the charge against Les Hyan was that certain people, knowing he had Company's opium in his possession, made out a case of alleged fraud against him, which had no foundation in fact. It was an easy matter to do this because he was Director of a company and had the opium is his possession. As late as January 21st, 1914, Lee Bysan had opium, and, accord ing to the petitioners evidener, they got him in a corner and " You swind- ler, we have got to get that opium back from you or you will go to › gaol," ~ But what did the "guilty" Lee Hysan del He weat and deliberately bought another

Con lordships to bear in mind that the petition was started by a man resident in Macao, and who had never appeared in that Court to take part in the proceedings. It was remarkable thing that no more respen- sible person could be found to file the peti tion, and why, when the petition was filed the whole thing was financed by "Koc." Counsel referred their lordships to the pasi tion of the Company towards the end of 1012, when these alleged swindles took place. The opium market was in a pre- carious condition, and it was looked upon
as being very precarious by the Barks in the Colony, and they could not get better indication. At this time the Yue Hing Company had substantial overdrafts from the International Bank and the French Bank who held opium as security. Pres sure was brought to bear, and during this period they found that Lee was the optimist and "Koo the pessimist regard ing the future of opium. "Lee" was for holding out despite Bank pressure for the liquidation of the overdraft, come amounts vera paid in the French bank sold some of the chests of opium held as security, and the International Bank received wwo payments of cash. It was at this time that Keo's $100,000 was paid into the when really did was to save the Infernational Bank as collateral security. Company a large sum of money. "Koo's $100,000 released some chests of opium which were sold and the money found its www into the coffers of the Company, but they heard nothing more of the 3100,000,
The appeal was again adjourned."
The case was adjourned.
