WHEN the news was first published that Germany considered herself in a state of war with Portugal there was a tendency among the Portuguese community in this Colony to treat the matter lightly and to ridicule the idea that the aid which Portugal can give to the Allies can have any influence on the conduct of the cam-to-day at noon and at 3 p.m. paign. SMALL-POX IN HONGKONG. During the week ending, March 11th twelve cases (all Chinese) of small-pox were reported, nine of which proved fatal. (2). Provisionally, the Harbour Office may grant permission to vessels employed in the regular line of navigation to enter or leave the waters of Macao after 8.30 p.m.

(3). During the hours in which vessels are allowed to enter or leave the waters. of Macho, no vessel shall do so without permission from the Harbour Office or its Maritime Stations...

(4). All vessels which are in the harbours of Macao, or which wish to enter or leave -

(5) Between 6.30 p.m. and 6.30 no person shall enter the Peninsula of
