There was a naval engagement off Aber deen on Monday evening. It was nothing very startling, and the result will have no great effect on the war în genern, but it was a good stand-up fight of the nature which took place in those day, “' when

With the moon just peeping over the hills and creating a lane of silver on the surface of the water, a fishing junk mann- EIGHT-ed by a brawny Aberdeen crew was slowly pushing its way from the deep-sea fishing ares to harbour. When a few milos out another large junk was suddenly silhouetted in the moonlight, crept to within 30 yards of the fishing junk and despatched a hail of ride shot. The Aberdeen men were completely surprised by this other junk, which had come from the direction of Macao, and the first round pnt out of action the master, his wife, the master's Yacht. aunt, and a faki, they being wounded in Bonita

SWATOW NOTES.

OPLUM CULTIVATION.

SWATOW, November 15th.

I have learned on reliable authority that people have been had enough to go opium once more. There is a flourish. ing and pretty extensive crop hat far from where I write these words. The old witticism of the Chinese philosopher is not far of the mark: A Chinaman is ready to baster his life for money." The opium too, flourishes not far from whore the uneven contest took place last year

One cannot help a feeling of amazement at the reckless and uncanny daring of these people If the Chinaman is anything he is a gambler, and this is a sheer case of gambling with heavy odds against his winning. I can scarcely think that his crop will attain to maturity, but, like the gambler he is, he will risk it.
