That for the Maidens" 1.43 1-6--was the slowest since 1860; that for the Fah Wal Stakes 3.43 1.5 the slowest since 1888; and that for the St Loger 4:15 2-8--also the slowest in the published records.
Despite adverse circumstances, the
racing was quite interesting, though there were naturally some startling upset in form. Some of the fields were particularly large in proportion to the entries, In the Navy Stokes, for instance, there were seventeen starters out of nineteen entrios, and in other as sturtura were as fol Iowa:Matos Plate, 10 out of 20-entries; Fah Wah Stakes, 13 out of 27 entries; St.. Loger, 12 out of 92; and Autumn Cup, 14 starters. There were very fow close finishes, the best being in the Fah Wah Stakes, in which The Trader gained a College, popular victory by margin of half-&-
length from Concession. Cause- The principal race of the day-the St. Leger Stakes-resulted in a remarkably Paul's,easy victory for Perfection Dahlia, by five lengths from his stable companion, Standard Dahliu, who in turn was a clear five lengths ahead of Rosewood. Tofield, the favourite, was done with. when 14 miles had been covered, and "Australian Chief" was the nearest- attendant upon the three placed ponies. The Autuma Cup furnished the greatest surprise of the day. Suffolk and Pence were heavily backed, but both failed badly, and the race was won smnewhat easily by the old Kinngwon pony Automaton, whose hackers received a dividend in the win- ning pari-mutuel of $691.60 for eacli. $5 invested. The winner paid $89.10.for. place dividend, and Bazaar, who finished second: $148.

CHINESE OFFICIALS TO LEARN RIDING.
President Tuan Shi-kai has decided that the members of the Ministry of War and the General Staff shall ride on horseback from their homes to their office, so that they will in due course of time be enabled to ride well. At first it was intended that every military officer who earn a monthly salary of $100 should buy his own pony and feed it at his own expense, but now the Government has decided to supply these officers with horses,
