Much the same misunderstanding may exist between different classes in the same community. When MORRISON wrote his Tales of Mean Streets he did not

It behoves us, therefore, to be careful in looking to Japan or to any other country, or that matter-to find instances of thrift which are deserving of imitation. If the British people are to cut down their living expenses it will not ho by way of adopting strange methods of living, unsuitable to the national con- stitution, such as adopting a vegetarian diet, for instance. Yet we find Mr. J. M. ROBERTSON, the well-known English poli. tician, writing of the unnecessary con sumption which still goes on in such expensive forms of diet as butcher-meat," as though meat were a luxury with which the people might dispense.
