To-day is the centenary of the Peace Treaty of Ghent,
The papers in editorials point out that, though the celebrations are overshadowed by the war, thay gain in significance by the vindication of
our motives in the war.
As an illustration of the unshakeable basis upon which Anglo- American sympathy is founded the British Committee announces that the plans for the celebration will bo renewed at the end of the war.
Earl Grey, acting on behalf of the British Committee, has cabled fraternal greetings to Colonel Roosevelt, the President of the American Committee.
GERMAN AVIATOR DROPS A BOMB IN DOVER,
LONDON, December 24th, 2.55 p.m. The Official Fress Bureau announces that a German aeroplane appeared over Dover at 11 o'clock in the morning, and dropped a bomb, which exploded in a garden. No damage was caused. The aeroplane was soon for only a few seconds, and left oversea. British aircraft immediately asconded, but the enemy was not seen again owing to the cloudy and foggy
weather.
GERMAN AIRCRAFT: OVER SHEERNESS.
LONDON, December 25th.
11.45 p.m.
The War Office announces that a hostile aeroplane was sighted at
12.30 this afternoon flying very high, oast to west, over Sheerness. Aircraft ascended in pursuit and engaged the enemy, who, after being hit three
or four times, was driven off senwards..
AUSTRIAN SUBMARINE ATTACKS FRENCH
BATTLESHIP.
LONDON, December 24th. 4.20 p.m.
A Paris official announcement says that an Austrian submarine launched two torpedoes at a French battleship in the Straits of Otranto. One of the torpedoes hit the battleship but caused little damage. There
were no casualties.

THE SITUATION IN INDIA.
December 24th.
The situation continues most satisfactory. The frontier is quiet. Recruiting has never been better, including trans-frontier Pathang. Considerably increased rates for wound, injury and family pension of Indian troops have been sanctioned.

The Russian Caucasus Staff report that the Turks have been defeated in the region of Van with severe losses. The Russians captured a mountain gun.
MUNIFICENT GIFTS TO THE ARMY BY INDIAN PRINCES,
LONDON, December 24th. The King has accepted a fleet of motor ambulances as a Christmas Gift to the British Army and Navy from the Maharajas of Gwalior.
The Maharajah and Begum of Bhopal are providing a hospital ship and the Maharajah has contributed £38,000 towards the folief Funds.
