LOCAL SPORT.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, MONDAY, DECEMBER 28TH, 1914.

Though the generally muggy weather which prevailed over the Xmas holidays. was not conducive to the gathering of big crowds in open spaces, the various cricket and football games which took place in the Colony were all very well attended, and plenty of interest was evinced. The play was always keen and there were several good individual performances..

RUGBY:

ENGLAND BEATEN BY

"

THE REST."

Favoured with the best of the solection The Rest experienced no real difficulty in defeating "England" a Happy Valley on Christmas Day afternoon. Early in the game the forwards of “The Rest made their superiority very appar ent and frequently indulged in dangerous rushes and well-manoeuvred wheeling. As a consequence the backs were able to attacke most of the time and points were scored by Campbell, the ex-Devon county three-quarter, and Ralston, the former dropping a goal. England made some most commendable efforts to upset the combination, but they were not strong enough: The Rest eventually winning by 1 goal (dropped) tries (16 points),

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.:

SERVICES DRAW WITH THE REST OF THE COLONY.

There was little of the holiday, free- and-easy spirit in the exhibition Soccer game between the United Services and the Rest of the Colony (selected from the Hongkong FC., and the Police levens) on the Club ground at Happy Valley on Boxing Day By the players the en-

counter vas takon very seriously, and one not in the know might well have. imagined that a fight for a highly-prized trophy was in progress, so vigorously and keenly was the match contested. The outcome-n pointless draw-was satis factory to all except perhaps the two lines of forwards.

The Services, & well-balanced, formid- able combination, whose advantage in height and weight was somewhat marked, were the aggressors at the outset, and there were several exciting tussles in front of Swan. Danger came more particularly from the left wing, which played together remarkably well,

The

pressure on the "Rest's' goal having been relieved, the Services were called upon to repoi a determined counter-attack. The forwards were sent back by Fenni nore, whose cool, clean, and resourceful defence was one of the features of the game, and again the Services took up the attack. So ran the exchanges throughout. There was scarcely any mid feld play, the ball being ither in front of one goal or in the vicinity of the other. Hongkong failed to open out the game sufficiently, the wing men remaining idle for long stretches with never a chance to get going, while the efforts of the team as a whole were too disjointed to make much impression on the very steady defence which the Services put up. There was none of that short, sharp passing against which a defence is made to look more or less holpless and weak. There were occasional good, individual efforts, however, but they were too short-lived. On the other hand, while the Services. showed a much better understanding, their shocting was lamentably inefficicut. In the second portion both goals under went a few extraordinary escapes. Once the Services' pivot was left with a clear shot at point blank range, but he banged wide and high when a more side-footed thrust was all that was necessary. At the other end a shot from the left wing grazed the angle of the posts with the custodian completely beaten. One of the best efforts of the game came from the foot of Hopper, the Services" right-winger Tak- ing the ball close in on the fly, ho sent in a real clipper, which Swan saved magnificently by tipping over the bar. It was one of the few tit-bits of the game that aroused real enthusiasm. As the game neared its end, play brightened up considerably, and both quintettes renewed with even greater vigour their attempts to obtain a tangible result.. It was all unayailing, however, and the defences came out on tap, the exhibition terminal-] ing with no goal to either side.

CLUB UNITED SERVICES.

This all-day match was played on the Club Ground on Saturday, and in the afternoon the band of the 24th Punjabis onlivened the proceedings with up-to-date selections, The Club wore always too good for the Services weakened XI. and had very much their own way as the scores below indicata A total of 257 was far too high for the Service hatsmen, who lost on the first inning by 169 rung The feature of the Club'a innings was the partnership of Meas and Anderson, who brought the score from $7 to 200 before they were separated.
