THE ARRANGEMENTS FOR COLLECTING IN HONGKONG.
The following statenient has been issued by the local Han, Secretary, Hon. Mr.
. R. Hallifax:--
The Committee appointed to organise the subscriptions to this Fund propose to proceed by asking the Heads of all British Firms in the Colony to content to act
as Sub-Collectors. Numbered Subscrip- tion Lists will be forwarded to them of
two kinds one for single subscriptions nud one for monthly subscriptions. They will be good enough to collect the money on the single subscription lists, and to forward it (with the lists) weekly to the Hon. Treasurer, Hongkong and Shanghai Buk, who will issue receipts as may be required. Subscribers who
require separate receipts should note the fact on the subscription lists; in the absence of much a noto, the periodical publication of the subscription lists in the Press will
be considered sufficient.

At the Magistracy yesterday, before Mr. J. R. Wood, a Chinese boatman was, charged with being in unlawful possession of 880 taels of prepared opium, and, further, with offering a bribe of $415 to two Revenue Officers.
Mr. R. O. Hutchison (Superintendent of Imports and Exports) prosecuted, and
Mr. Leo d'Almada defended,
From the evidence for the prosecution,
it appeared that two Chinese revenue the 10th inst. officers, in uniform, on hailed the defendant's sampan, which was then lying off the Garrison Street pier. They got on board and commenced to search, with the result that they found bag containing 880 tsels of prepared opium. The boatman offered them a bribe of 8415 to let him go, but they took him with the opium to the office of the Superintendent of Imports and Exports, where he was questioned and eventually charged.

CHASING THE "GOEDEN" AND "BRESLAU."
