THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, AUGUST 1TH, 1914.

A novel exhibit at the London Bonds Congress was a water-ballast motor roller, designed to produce a straight or regn larly curved surface, free from the waves occur in or depressions that often ordinary rolling. The new invention- that of Crompton and Tapp-has a rigid three water-filled oylinders as rollers, the two end rollers being pivoted for steering, and the central one, which alone has springs, being the driver. Adjustable stops limit the rise of the central rollor. The sample machine weighed 27,000 pounds, with its full load of water ballast, but, to keep all rollers on the ground, it was so arranged that the front roller would always carry at least 1,000 pounds more than the rear one. The central axle is somewhat nearer the rear than the forward one, the difference of spacing adding to the action of the adjusted roflor in preventing the formation of waves.

STARVED SEEDLINGS.

Plant monsters are developed by Prof. J. A. Urbain, of the Sorbonne, by remov ing the albumen from seeds. The experi ments prove that this food reserve is not absolutely essential to the existence of the young plant, hut without it growth is greatly changed. Without their albumen, seeds of the poppy and other plants germinated normally. The plants, how- ever, developed only into dwarfed and stunted forms, with modified leaves, and flowers freakishly deformed.

As an example of results, it may be mentioned that a certain altar- front at the Grafton Galleries proved to bear paint of the kind used by Byzantine artists, and that some blue lines indicated that the picture was older than 1250, the date on it, and that it may have been painted in the East. An aid in the investigation has been a special camera, which photographs directly on a negative

portion of the picture showing the brush-marks of the painter an identifica- tion clus much like the thumb-marks sunght-by-the-police-detectiva.
