CHINESE ART AND MODERN VANDALS.
China is oppressed by many evils of which no man can foresee the end, and, from most of them her own patient millions are the principal sufferers. The burden of incompetence and rapacity, the exactions of corrupt officials, the cruelty and lust of flendish bandits fall directly apon them. But there is one evil, los than these in magnitude but quite sa irreparable, which, if it be not quickly stayed, will inflict serious loss upon the world at large. It has begun already to leave a track as ineffaceable as that of fire or sword and, although Chinamen aro the willing instruments, respon- sibility lies heavily upon the peoples of European origin. We refer to the ruthless plundering and destruction of the noble monuments of Chinese art. It is no more question of buying and selling and exporting objects that can be trans- ferred intact to some museum or secure collection in private hands, where although removed from their place of origin, they can still be studied with profit and enjoyment. There is wanton, ruthless," wholesale devantation. It is only within the last few years that appreciation of early Chinese sculpture has become widespread and the passion of collectore correspondingly excited, and the ravages that have been made in this short time are almost beyond belief. Colossal figures sculptured in relief, which illustrate in their own surround- ings the wealth of Buddhist legend and theology, are mangled, sawn asunder, or broken into pieces by clumsy thieves, in order that fragments may be taken to Peking and sold to European dealers. They are bought with cagerness representatives of museums who would shrink from initiating the traffic, but argue that, as the spoil is already at their hands, it is their duty at least to provide it with a worthy resting-placc Competition grows, prices rise, and the

China is looked upon by many authori- ties as the last great conservatory of art and archeology in the world. Since 1860 it has been unlocked to the collector, and its more accessible districts have been ransacked with increasing zest for pored lain, paintings, and ・ curios
of every kind, but in recent years the improve- ment in means of transport and com- munication bas laid open an ever- widening field. Now the results of closer research and exhaustion of the more familiar objects of pursuit have turned the desires of the foreigner into direc tione hitherto unknown. What cannot be removed intact is broken and carried off piecemeal. The careful photographic records of honourable explorers have been pressed into discreditable service. The well-known Chinese davant, M. Edouard Chavannes, published five years ago two large porfolios of beautiful plates illustrating the results of his “ Mission Archéologique dans la Chine Bapten- trionale. A large number of these are devoted to the remarkable Buddhist sculptures of Yun-keng and of Lang-men, the former dating from the fifth century. A.D. and the latter from the sixth to the eighth, At Lung men, in the north of the province of Honan, the river Yi, a minor tributary of the Hwang-ho, runs through a defle in a limestone mountain, which was once the seat of a populous city, now almost obliterated save for the wealth of its artistic remains. The side of the mountain is for a long distance honeycombed with niches and grottons, some of which expand into temples two or three hundred feet long and a hundred fest high. These are enriched with sculpture in relief, carved on the surface of the rock, and some of it painted in
colour that is well preserved. The sculptures represent Buddha and the saints of the Buddhist faith, grouped and
surrounded by multitudes of accessories.

How is all this havoc to be stopply The task will not be cany. The really effective remedy lies in the good sense and good taste of collectors them solves. Now that the facts have been made clear European and American connoisseurs will be without excuse, if they countenance the evil traffic. No genuine lover of art and antiquity cso feel anything but contempt for the vulgar greed of possession which is willing that a statute or a group shall be destroyed in order that a fragment may be displayed. Something, too, may ho done by bringing moral suasion to bear upon Chinese officials, to induce them to preserve great walls and Imperial tomba and other monuments of which their country has Asiatic archeology, and of preserving reason to be proud.
