Neuralgia,
Nervous Breakdown -
NURSE HALL, c/o Mrs. Bassett, Commercial Place, Landport, Portsmouth, Eng., writes:-"I was suffering from nervous breakdown with Internal Neuralgia, when I began a course of Phosferine. After having taken it for three or four months, I felt better than I had done for two years previously, and consider it the best tonic I have ever tried. As a remedy for all nervous disorders I think there is nothing to equal Phosferine, especially as I was given up by more than one doctor previous to taking Phosferine, and cau now say I am perfectly well and strong, and have taken nothing else."
No other medicine has received such absolute proof of its extraordinary properties in restoring Shattered Constitutions, and in giving back to the prematurely aged New Life and Eftergy.

FASHIONS AND FANCIES.
THE PARIBIENNES' PROTEST.
It is good news that the great ladies of Paria have united in a Patriotic League to protest against the bizarre ugliness of gowns and costumes now made in that city, once so justly celebrated for good taste and refinement in matters sartorial, Though the rage of extravagance and eccentricity in the fashions has seized too. strongly upon the world to be very easily stemmed, yet the action of these ladies, some of the most highly placed in French society, will have a good effect, particular ly when the racing season begins, and the crowds who gather on the lawns and in the paddocks see how graceful and how beautifully worn are the costumes of the ng-born dames who find it inconsistent with the dignity of their position to adopt the ill-advised, and sometimes even vulgar modes started by some of the men milliners of the City of Light.
THE WALKING COSTUME.
The corealet skirt has had a very long innings, and as three fourths of the now walking skirts are cut in this form, there is not much chance of its being bowled out at present,
One of these skirts as the front plcated into a deep yoko in broad, Bat folds, a very wide ono in the front, and five of about half its width) forming the sides and back Another has fness gathered in at the back instead of pleats, and a third is so cut as to fit perfectly on the hips and yet fall in flat pleats below, All these are provided with pockets, a boon that womankind will gratefully accent, though tailors are sure. to warn them to carry nothing in them for fear of destroying the "line. Still, called "nothing, and in an accessible a tiny handkerchief, folded flat, may be position is a valuable pussession. It may be mentioned that the smart walking skirt is quite short this season, the hem
scarcely reaching the ankles, completely clearing the instep. Draped skirts are longer and are much interfered with by the very high heels now in fashion. Perhaps this is why some of the. are so curiously lifted both front and back KOHAR while the sides remain long, not by any means a graceful arrangement.
A GLEAM OF HOPE.
Though it may be some time hence, the return of the balayeuse is fairly certain, and that means a widening of the skirt about the ankles and a feminising of the garment by the introduction of soft frillery. Already the way is being paved! by the many who under slit skirts shear lace pleats and flat flounces of chiffon or silk muslin. This opens the door to real change, a return to the underskirt, which, though kept perfectly flat to the figure from waist to knee, yet has thence to nakle sufficient fullness to give freedum of movement in walking. The various new modes of draping the skirt at the back, though some of them are more peculiar than pretty, are all leading back to the graceful, natural fall of folds us opposed
the clinging Lightness
to
of today, which reseats in perfect figures. with no less fidelity than it outlines the perfect. And which are the niore numerous? The draped silk gowns which are already so much worn by the smart have no longer ultra-tightness round the hem, though tailors are producing the trouser-skirt for some of their clients. This provis that masculinity in dress ie dear to the hearts of many wonen. is really difficult to distinguish in the street which is approaching, man or woman, especially when the latter wears an extremely small hat. As a matter of fact, men's coats now fit better than women's, but at a little distarice this distinetion is scarcely apparent.
∙It
HANDSOME AFTERNOON GOWNS. Made of velvet in the colour known as toast," the skirt is short and close. fitting. Over it falls a tunic shaped like
chorister's surplice in embroidered Fochre-tinted net lined with toast-coloured silk, which is continued for five or six inches below the tanic and embroidered in silks and beads in shaded ochre and ruddy brown. Another gown in black cloth is embroidered with the new white Egyptian beads round the lower part of the skirt and again on the shoulders and cuffs. By the way, sleaves are no longer close fitting for daytime wear, but resemble bishops' sleaves without the usual fulness. The tanie is now a means of indulging an. artistic taste in colour, owing to the fashion of lining its transparent material with colour. For instance, a deep Wedgwood blue skirt has a net tunic lined with old ross or lilac-leaf green, either with very happy effect. Broché silk, patterned velvet, but above all, plain silk, are the materials for gowns, and fur trimmings are applied to many of the newest models, even those made of silk muslin or soft satine. Coats are very long at the back and quite short in front, coming up in sweeping curves at the sides, The new capes, which have caught on in a day are magnificent, with their embroideries on every seam, down the fronts and round the edges of the very long flat hoods, open but caught with handsome silk cord ornaments much tanselled.
HUMANITY AND FASHION. Now and then fashion, which concerna itself little about humanity, accidentally favours it. The ostrich feather replaces this season the Paradise plume The former costs the bird as little pain as we feel when a hair is plucked from the head The Bird of Paradise has to be killed before his plume can be wrenched away from him. In Parliament last week it was stated that 24,000 humming birds wore sold in London last June, case of the 77,000 egrets, and 162,000 kingüishera. vanity of women-going hand-in-hand with the rapacity of man," said the mover of the secon reading of the Plumage Bill, which was carried by an Dorinous majority.-K.
