THE AUSTRALIAN ORIENTAL
Now, gentlemen,
I turn to one or twof JILATJAP.. other points which, I think, are of some interest in this report. We have, as you 800, an important note in reference to oar mail service, and that this service the was extended for 12 months at Tnstance of his Majesty's Postmaster- General, and with our assent, under, no doubt, the conviction on the part of the Post Office that they had pecuniarily a most advantageous contract, and that the efficiency and punctuality of the service were patent evorywhere throughout the East. I believe the Post Office impression on this point is derived mainly from two particular rounds. In the first place, they are well aware of the great increase in the cost of navigation, of which our coal bill this year is a simple test; and, again, they are also cognizant, eren as much as we are, of the enormous growth of postal natter during recent years. that point I venture to give a simple illustration by stating that the Indian parcels conveyed between Bombay and England daring last year must have amounted to about 500,000 packages. And, gentlemen, this is not postal matter in the ordinary sense of the word: it is! really eargo, and it ought to pay, at all events, a moderate freight.
