I have just had an opportunity of discussing some important questiona bear. ing on the forthcoming opening of the Panama Canal with Mr. William H. Kaisha, who has now returned to this Avery, the manager of the Toyo Kisen. country from a visit to the Panama district.
In business Mr. Avory was ship with the late Mr. Harriman, whon frequently brought into close relation he knew intimately, and a good deal of interest attaches to his views, not only on the purely shipping questions, but also on the railway and general trade aspects of the approaching opening of the Canal to traffic.
AN EXPERIMENTAL PERIOD, that a few light draught ships would be First, Mr. Avery expressed the view passed right through the Canal in the course of next year. POSSIBLE. NEW SHIPPING SERVICES. Mr. Avery is particularly concerned in shipping, and therefore it is interesting to note that he considers that the itinerary of not a single passenger line transferred from the Suez to the Panama from Europe to the Far East will be Causl route.
One reason for this belief is that most of the lines trading between Europe and the Far East tap the valuable the northerly points will be brought Indian trade and another is that only nearer by the Fanama Canal He con- sidora, however, that such line as the The N.Y.K. str. Kamo Maru (European Nippon Yusen Kaitha may be expected Line) left Yokohama for this port via to inaugurate cargo services from Europe ports on the 22nd October, and is expected to Japan through the Canal, and also, bere on the 3rd November.
The Barber Line str. Saint Patrick, perhaps Trae New York to Japan; and possibly that the To Kisen Kaisha, from New York, left Sabang on the 25th with which he is assciated, will do like- October, and is due to arrive at Hong-wise. The company already maintains kong on the 3rd November.
