SCIENTIFIC MISCELLANY,

CANCER FROM COAL-BURNING, Increasing evidence indicates that. chemical irritants are often connected with cancer, and late British observations suggest some influence of the sulphur in con The disease seems to affect those who use coal as füel much more than those who burn only peat, C. L. Green reports that in coal-burning parts of Nairnshire the death-rate is notably high, but that in a section of the county depend- ing on peat there has been but one cancer death in ten years, and the Orkneys show similar difference. The only exception to the rule that the burners of coal are the sufforors was found in certain islands where, with high cancer rate, peat is used that is of a peculiar coal-like, sulphurous kind. The ill-effects are attributed to the milphur dioxide produced in combus tion, and it is pointed out that forms of cancer result from handling coal-tar, among chimney sweepers, and among workers in cobalt and tin-the irritants being probably various.

POWER AS A CURIOUS BY-PRODUCT..

Makers of carbon black at Wilsonburg, W. Va, obtain from power in a novel mauner. The product is deposited from the flames" of natural gas, and power was originally supplied by a steam boiler and engine. The Ras issued at a pressure of 950 pounds from a well 3,000 feet deep. It was suggested that this pressure might be utilized, and accordingly the gas was

led in place of steam to the engine, which was thus driven and acted as a reducing valve, delivering the gas at low pressure to a discharge tank feeding the carbon buildings. The cagine, requiring no attendant, continues to give uniform

satisfactory service.

FROSTED LAMP GLOBES.

Half-frosting filament lamps is found by A. J. Makower to reduce the mean hemispherical candle-power 10 to 20 per cent. The exact amount of light absorbed in the lower hemisphere, however, varies with the arrangement of the filament and is different in carbon and metal lamps. Bettor distribution and lessened glare anore than compensate for the loss.

WITHOUT MICROBES.

To determine just what offcet complete absence of miscrobes would have on the life of animals is one of the fascinating problems of the day. In his experiments since May, 1911, Guyenot, a Paris biologist has reared about 40 gonerations of the common fly, producing about 400,000 individuals in a single line, and has kept specimens under continuous exclusion from microbes, feeding them with specially sterilised food. At 75 degrees F, the development from the egg has been completed in 12 days, laying being begun by the female in a day or two aftor emerging in the adult state. The flies have continued quite normal, and the successive generations have shown lessoning of fecundity. In development under the conditions of protection there has been a great gain, the usual large mortality of the larva and pupa baving. boon reduced to practically nothing.

MSROOM CORN PATER,

One of the most promising of the various proposed new sources of paper- Fulg is broom corn. A report of Italian experiments states that the twigs of this piant are passed through suitable breaking

then soaked for a con- machine, siderable time in caustic soda Ive," and ifberward submitted to a second brock- After the crushed mass freed moisture in a hydraulic press. it is separated into fibres, washed and bleached. This prepared nulp can be made into papers of the finest quality. The water pressed from the pulp sup plies alkali useful for soad-making.

VOLCANIC REFRIGERATION.

Thore is a growing tendency to at tribute glacial period to the cooling by atmospheric dust during long seasons of extraordinary volcanic activity. Even modern volcances have perceptible effect, and the meteorological records found by W. J. Humphrys show that since 1750 the cold periods have all been receded by. volcanic eruptions, the duration of un- usual cold varying with the extent of the The great ejection of dust eruption. from Krakatos in 1883 was followed by lowered average temperatures of 1 degree Messire to 2 degrees F.. for three years, ments sinco 1683 prove that dust in the upper atmosphere cuts off radiation frem the sun, and its intensity at the earth's surface has been lowered as much as 20 per cent..
