DIRECTORS OF THE MALAQQA PLANTATIONS TAKE ACTION

"DEFINITE MOVEMENT TO FORM A CENTRAL De pe Stu SELLING AGENCY,

We are able to announce, saya the Financial Times, a vary important step, forward in the movement for the establishment of Central Selling Agency for plantation rubber, the pro- posals for the formation of which were first put forward in our columns on the 10th instant. It will be seen from the letter which we print below that the Directors of the Malacca Rubber Planta tions, Ltd., are taking definite action for the formation of a Central Selling Agency in the manner indicated by us They ask that those companies who recognise the advantages of combination will communicate with the secretary of the Malacca Plantations with a view to, as cdon as a certain number of companies. have indicated their intention to co- operate, appointing a secretary who could place himself in communication with all the plantation companies, so that the question of whether a central selling organisation can or can not bo promptly determined. Apart frors this, the Malacca Plantations' Directors state that they are prepared to sell the whole. of their Company's output for the next five years through Central Selling Agency provided that such agency controls the sale of the output of com- panies representing at least 30,000 tons of next year's crop. It will also be noticed that the Malacca Plantations Directors are of the opinion that the service of ruboer produce brokers should be retained, and they make their offer conditional upon the continued employ ment of the brokers.

The decision of the Directors of "the Malacca Rubber Plantations at once con- verts the question of the establishment of a Central Selling Agency from mere. discussion into action. The fact that the action originates. with the defnite "Malacca Plantations is in itself of

considerable importance,

that because Company is the largest of the plantation Its robber planted area is 15,000 acres on which are

producing companies. about 2 million Para rubber trees, and 1hs, of rubber, while the estimated pro its outpat for 1912 amounted to 2,220,000 daction for 1913 over 3,000.000 lbs, of which 1,807,500 lbs. had been collected by the end of August,

With regard to the Central Soiling. Agency, the outline of the scheme nut forward in cur columns is brielly as follows: (a) All plantation companies should be invited to join a General Council, each Company's representative on the Council to have one vote for every 100 acres planted and one additional vote for over 100 acres wholly or partly in bearing belonging to his company: (h) the General Council to proceed to estab lish a Central Selling Agency, through which all the rubber of the co-operating and the companies shall be sold
