attention of the spectators was focussed on the other three swimmers. Farmer

and Souza continued side by side, but in the final lengths their paco slackened considerably, while Claxton, with his long. easy stroke, gradually overhauled them and secured third place by some fifty yards. Souza and Farmer raced neck and neck till the finish, Souza with a final spurt just succeeding in beating the Cordialman.

Finch's performance is the best that has been seen in the Colony, and it will probably be some time before the record he established on Saturday will be lowered. The previous record for the Colony was put up by Logan, whose time was 14min. 14 2-5secs. Finch has lowered this by min. 22 3-5secs, while Cooke's time in the last race was better than Logan's by Imin. 62-5secs. Doubtless Logan could have covered the distance in much better time than he did, and a race between him and the present champion of the Colony-and probably of the Far East--would have been well worth seeing. Finch, who was generally congratulated after his performance, was fresh enough to enter the bath almost immediately. after the race and take part in a scratchi game of water polo. Cooke also was deservedly complimented for the excellent race he swam, and it is remarkable fact that he is doing better in these days when he may be classed as a veteran than he
