TRADE OF WUCHOW AND NANNING IN 1912.
Mr. Acting Cougal Oliver R. Conles in his report of the Trado of Wuchow and Napsing for the year 1912 writes:- In common with other parts of China the province of Kwangsi enjoyed prosper- ous times during 1912, in spite of the unsettled conditions fellowing on the revolution of 1911. The year, however, opened badly, with the country generally disturbed by armed bands of robbers, and the waterways of the provinen remained for some time unsafe for traffic.
The
demand for imports up-country was even then very brisit, and when the Government bad by severo incasures restored the pre- vince to a comparative state of tranquil- lity trade revived quickly, and the ground. lost in the first part of the year was soon made up. Although to a certain extent. marred by floods at harvest timo the spring tito crop was one of the best on record, and very large quantities were exported to Canton and the delta. The profits from this and the previous harvest. together will the high rate of exchaugoj which prevailed throughout the year, stimulated foreign imports so much that the best previous figures wero surpassed by over 18 per cent, when the value is reckoned in silver.
As all the trade of Nanning passes through Wnelow the figures for the two West River ports have been combined in the statisties given in this report.
The net trade of the two ports for 1911- 12 were as follows:--
