THE LIGHT-WEIGHT ENGINE-METAL. Magnalium is an alloy of aluminum with 5 to 20 per cent. of chagnesium. It has been used for the cylinders and pistous of gasoline engines and for other purposes, and has attracted especial attention for aeroplans and other usca requiring lightness. Some of its remark able claims to favour were Morris Machol, in a late paper to the noted by Society of Automobile Engineers. specific gravity is 2.5, that of aluminum being 3.0, and cast-iron 7.5; and, while Lough instead of brittie, it slows a tensile strength of 23,000 pounds per square inch, that of cast-iron being 18,000 to 20,000 pounds. THE METAL CENTILE,
The extraordinary increase in the rate of production of important metals was noted in a late address of Bedford McNeill. British metallurgist. In the decade ending with 1911, the increase ranged from 20 per cent, for lead to 51.9 68 for copper. Of gold the increase in for aluminum, and was 58 for iron and production was 78 per cent, the world's annual output being now more than the total production in the 60 years preceding 1700, The increase in silver production was 1 per cent,

AN OVERLOOKED FOOD-FEODUCER. Failure to investigate the goat is a neglect of the United States Department of Agriculture that is deplored by Dr. W. Sheldon Bull, and in a recent pamphlet he makes a plea for the greater use of this neglected animal, especially in and near cities. In appreciation of its economic, dietary and sanitary value, America is much behind other civilized countries. The ideal locality for the guat is high, rocky, and overgrown with weeds and brush, hut it thrives when tethered on grass-land, and even when kept con- stantly in barns.
