A HOESE FOR HOT CLIMATES,
In the steel and coment house for the tropics designed in England by T. F. G. Mayer, keeping out the mosquito has been a chief consideration, but the building seems to have advantages in resistance to Tropical storms. The plinth on which the structure is built, with the floor and a low wall, are of concrete. The wall is! extended by a steel frame, and this is filled in with specially-made and very strong mosquito-netting, kept taut and ado secure against entrance hy por- forated steel plates on both sides. Lobby entrances at the ends are clued by spring- doors. The roof has non-conducting states of fibre cement, is ventilated by louver windows at the ends, and is completely wparated from the-lower-part- of the house by an asbestos ceiling. Shutters, manipulated from the insido by turning kandles, surround the building. There may be several storeys, and if Boreens and blinds Era noi suficient divi- sion, brick partitions may be used by sacrificing something of the cool openness. The little "wood" necessary is tinted against white ants.
ROGARED FARMING,
An explanation of the improvement of European agriculture in recent years has been sought, and in Germany it is |attributed to soil stimulation from beet culture From the books of eight scat- tered estates where beets have been grown for sugar, Dr. Lilienthal finds an increase in the yield of wheat of 5.95 bushels per acre; rye, 1.50; harley, 6.51; and oats, 5.77. Cattle have increased, and the net income has been raised by as high as 70 per cent.
