CARE OF LEPERS IN CHINA,

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, MAY 21ST. 1913.

For true heroism and Christian devotion there surely cannot be anything, says the Daily Graphic, to equal the life of Father Courardy, a Catholic priest who for 24 years has laboured in the Leper Island at Sheklung, in the Kwangtung Province of China. Like the late Father Darien, whose friend he was, he has untiringly administered to the material and spiritual needs of the lepers, and, practically un- assisted, be has done his utmost to The alleviate their terrible sufferings, obstacles Father Conrardy bus had to face lese heroic would have daunted many spirit, and recently these obstacles have increased. In spite of the Republican of China, bands administration in robbers are still at large, and twice in June Inst Father Conrardy, who is 72 was robbed of all the years of age, property and money that evuld cog- veniently bo carried away from the settlement, and he barely escaped with his life.

The following extracts from a letter sent by Father Conrardy to the Rev. II. B.. Chapman, of the Chapel Royal, Savoy, speak for themselves:

For several months last year there was security nowhere. I was told to take refuge, but I could not abandon my children, the lepers. The brigands often On said they wanted to kill me. December 14th, during the night, abou? 20 came: this time they caught me. I Hearing some noise in my house, I thought some loper had come to call for me. lighted my lamp and opened my door, only to be covered with revolvers from head to foot. I asked them what they wanted, and sat down to see what was next on the programme, I surely expected they would kill me, for I had heard from thom that should I fall into their bands they would But, thank God, they were rip me open. satisfied to take away everything. Now, in spite of my 72 years, I have still to do much work among over 1,000 lopers, with scanty means, and only one singe assistant for all the work, physical, spiritual, and intellectual, I hope charitable people will understand my position, and help me in my work.

The Canton. Government
