MEMORIAL TO DR. LALOAOA.

INVEILING CEREMONY. •

Memories of the acassination of Sir Curzon Wyllie in the vestibule of the Jehonghir Hall of the Imperial Institute on the night of July 1, 1908, were revived last month, when on the stairs of the vestibule Lord George Hamilton unveiled A bust of Dr. Cawas Lalcaca, the Parsi physician of Shanghai who lost his life in the brave attempt to interpose between Sir Carzon and his assailant. Sir Man cherjee BhownaggreeTM prosided, and the company included two former Governora of Bombay, Lord Harris and Lord. Lamington Professor Wyndham Duna tan. Mr. Lionel Abrahams (Assistant Under-Serretary of State for dia), Mr. Francis Hutt - (caurin of Sir CurzoŃ Wyllie), Colonel Sir James Dunlop Smith, Colonel Sir David Barr, Sir Krishna Gupta, and Mr. Abbos Ali Baig (members of the Council of India), Sir Lesley Probyn, Countess Martinengo (president of the Oriental Club), Colonol T. H. Hendley, representatives of various Indian societies in this country, and Mr. M. M. Gandevia (hon, secretary),

Sir M. M. Bhownaggree, on behalf of the Bombay committee of subscribers, offered the bust for necontance by the authorities of the Imuerial Institute: Hr read a letter from Lady Wyllie stating that it would be impossible for her to attend a ceremony reviving memories so painful But she was very glad that the brave deed of Dr. Lalcach was to be com memorated here as well as in India; and she had asked Mr. Hutt to place a wreath at the base of the bust on her behalf. Sir Mancherjee gave particulars of the move- ments to do honour to the memory of Dr. Laleaca in Bombay, in London, apú also in Shanghai, where he had practised his profession for many years.

Lord George Hamilton, in performing the unveiling ceremony, said it would be a lasting gratification to him to have been associated with this tribute to the memory of a brave and loyal Indian, who when à sudden call to duty was made upon him responded without besitation and thereby sacrificed his life.

The bust, of which a replica has been erected in Bombay, is the work of Mr. F. W. Dovie Jones, of Cheisen, and is an admirable likeness of Dr. Lalcaen. It is in white Pentelic marble, with pale green Cippolino plinth, the whole standing ̈unon a pedestal of dark green tinos, upon which is fixed a bronze inscription panel. Professor Wyndham Dunstan, director of the Imperial Institute, formally accept- ed charge of the bust, and

Lord Harris proposed a vote of thanks to the Bombay committee for presenting and the Imperial Institute. for accepting the bust. He said he was glad to learn that the bulk of the Bombay memorial fund was to be devoted to hospital work, and would thus be associated with the
