CAPTAIN GAUNT, R.N.
Ernest Frederic Augustus Captain Gaunt (M.G.. has succeeded Rear-! Admiral Erskine as commodore second- class in command of the Royal Naval Bar racks at Chatham. From September, 1898, to October, 1888, he was commissioner for Wei-bai-wei and administrator of Liu- kung-Tao. He was naval officer in charge at Wei-hai-wei for some time after this, and upon the outbreak of hostilities in North China in July, 1909, became com- missioner and transport officer there. He was mentioned in General Gascice's dispatches of May, 1901, and received the thanks of the Austrians and Corman: Commander-in-Chief for his services, as well as acknowledgments from the Ad miralty. He was awarded the C.M.C. in the birthday honours of June, 1902, in consequence, besides receiving the Chinn medal.
