THE TRADE UNION SPIRIT.
This is the second strike which has oc curred within the last week, the other having been one in which the carpenters took part. That was settled without trouble. Probably these strikes would pass without attention from the foreign community, as so many others have done, were it not for the fact that the trade union spirit is in this and other cases. SHANGHAI STOCK EXCHANGE QUOTATIONS.
On behalf of the Committee of the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Mr. H. H. Read, the Chairman, has sent the follow- ing communication to the newspapers of the Settlement:--
It will have been generally noted by those interested in the local share market, that notwithstanding a long list of daily transactions for cash the quotations for forward transactions are few and far be- tween. It is a matter of common know- ledge, however, that a considerable volume of forward business bas been transacted lately.
In response to the general desire two years ago for reform in the method of transacting forward business the Com- mittee of the Stock Exchange formulated Bye-Laws, rovised the Rules, and adopted a new form of Contract All these changes tended to make clear the status of broker and client, and were conducive to the safety of all concerned. The chief reform, however, consisted in the monthly adjustment of differences between the Cash and Contract prices by which all forward transactions officially quoted have to be registered with the Secretary who at the end of the first intervening month calls upon the broker, against whom the market has gone, to make good the difference between the then current rate and his contract price. This system has so far worked very well, and contracts o registered are protected by the Stock Exchange to the extent of the Cash de- posited and the disciplinary.....powers vested in the Committee.

Practically all of the forward business lately transected, whether between two clients (in which case there is no liability attaching to the broker) or on behalf of a client by a broker with another broker, has not been quoted, and therefore by the rules the Committee will take no cogniz ance of any claim arising from any such transaction. This simply means that for ward business is being conducted on the old lines, the evils of which were clearly evinced by the lawsuits arising out of the Settlements of June and September, 1910.
