THE GIRL NEXT DOOR.
SCIENTIFIC MISCELLANY
WIRELESS-CONTROL.
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10′′, 1912
Possibly you have never noticed the attrac
Within the last three or four years a num tions of your next-door neighbour, but a well-known journalist advises any young ber of striking experiments have been, made mon to marry the girl next door, if there in controlling from a distance the motions of is one! Of course, one's next-door neigh bour" might be miles off, but the principle small vessels, torpedoes and balloons, but is the same. He argues that the less change the most elaborate apparatus of the kind in anyone's mode of Bfe, when they get
seems to have been worked out by Christoph married, the better. There's some sense, in that, for change often means danger, Worth, of Nuremberg, and several backers.
Tintes out of number we hear from ladies who find, soon after marriage, that they cannot digest food as they used to do, and in most cases, it is somac change in their habits which has brought on their chronic indigestion. Here is a case in point.
Mrs. R. Joubert, 49, Morland Terrace, off Chiappini Street, Cape Town, writing us on August 25, 1911, said I have been a constant user of Mother Seigel's Syrup, both for myself and children, for many years, and an occasional dose has enabled me to avoid
serious illness.
"
Efirst tested the restorative virtues of Mother Seigel's Syrup БОСЛ after my marriage. At that time I had become a greater sufferer from indigestion, feeling faint and drowsy all day, and quite rest less and sleepless at night; while pains and palpitation of the heart were very severe and caused me endless misery.
I could only take food of a very light nature, but as I had no appetite, and my digestive organs were out of order, it did me practically no good. My mind was distract- ed, and I became a very troublesome invalid, had no heart to do anything, and was quite unable to undertake any of my usual duties In the house."
Nobody needs health and strength more than a woman who has her household duties to perform, especially when the little ones arrive, and make those thousand-and-che calls upon a mother which she alone can attend to. Mrs. Joubert was indeed ina bad way, but help was at hand.
"At this serious stage of my illness," she says, a friend insisted my giving Mother Seiger's Syrup a trial, and the result of the first bottle being most encouraging, Tpersevered. My health improved," and after finishing the third bottle of Syrup, was quite a different woman,
Not only a change in our habits, but even a change in the weather may cause indiges- tion. Indeed, goodness only knows some- times, where it does come from.
But we know it when we have it! Those pains after eating, those sick headaches and bilious attacks, the horrors of constipation and the like, tell us, unmistakably, that our digestive organs-the stomach, liver and bowels-are out of order. That is the time when Mother Seigel's Syrup is invaluable. The herbal extracts it contains act directly upon all the organs of digestion, toning them up and making them fit and able to do their work. As a cure for indigestion and all kindred complaints, Mother Seigel's Syrup has never- been equalled. It's success is world-wide and of forty years' duration. Try it your

This was all controlled by a single train of waves broken into Morse signals by a key. A prolonged pressure on the transmitting key changed the tuning of the receiver, and by frequent changes and the use of many useless signals it was made impossible for an enemy to transmit waves of the right pitch to interfere. Firing mines, sending life-boats to wrecks and controlling self-propelled torpedoes are among the uses suggested,
MILK POWDERED WITHOUT ALTERATION. In reducing milk to powder, a patented Swiss process evaporates about 85 per cent. of the water at a temperature of godeg, to Godeg. C. The milk is then exposed four seconds.in a layer of an eighth or a quarter of an inch in depth on a surface heated to 10gdeg. The second heating removes 9 to ro per cent, of the remaining water, and the resulting milk powder is not only sterile, but the albumen is not coagulated.
GAS IGNITION BY TELEPHONES.
The possibility of igniting gas by sparks from telephone apparatus was shown by z late German investigation, although no such accident had been reported. It was decided that telephones in gas: works might be per mitted, but that the bells, etc., should have a covering of wire gauze.

NATURAL, STEEL,
Iron ores are chiefly oxides, and native iron is almost unknown except "in" "the meteorites occasionally picked up. Some native iron discovered by Nordenskjold at Ovifak, Greculand, in 1870, is now known to be of terrestrial origin, although it was at first supposed to be metoric like other masses. A microscopic study of this iron has been. lately made by C. Benedicks, who finds that it is really a natural steel high in sul- phur and carbon, with a structure different from that of meteoric Iron, and having the internal arrangement peculiar to carbon steel that has been rapidly cooled below Toodeg. C. This confirms the already pre- ferd view that the Greenland iron--instead of coming to the surface in unoxidized con- dition was reduced from the basalt by carbonaceous shale through which the molten mass was ejected.

SOLL DISINFECTION,
As the poisoning of the harmful bacteria in the soil may injuriously affect useful plants, a French agriculturist has proposed the use of volatile poisons, which evaporate after sterilizing the soil, ready for planting Effective sterilizers have been found in copper salts, iron sulphate, formol, carbolic deriva tives, and carbon disulphide, but these are to be applied with due regard to the character of the solle of the crop expected, and of the germs likely to do harm. The iron and copper salts, for instance, are rendered Inert by chemical reaction with calcareous sois.
