ALLRED CABLE ROUTE IMPOSSIBLE.

EFFECT OF THE AMERICAN COMBINE,

The great cable trast, announced recently in-consequence of which all Atlantic lines ha come under American control, has destroyed all hope of in "Ali-Red" cable roule says a London contemporary,

The Atlantic cables wore the vital parts of the link betwcon England, Canada, and Australasia, and so long as they were entirely British lines there was every hope of an All British" cable rout

All cables betwean Canada and Australia and New Zealand are Stato-owned, and controlled by what is known as the Pacific Cable Board, which is composed of representives of the joint owners-Great Britain, Canada and Australia.

The Pacific Cable Board controls and oras all the cables from Australia and New Zealand to Canada, but the Atlantic companies, which are now entirely under American control, om- mand communication between Great Britain and Montreal.

"The passing of the control of the Atlantic cables iato American hands is a serious watter to all who were building up hopes of an 'All- Red' cable route," said an officer of the Pasillo Cable Board to an Express representative,

"What it means in. this: There is now no British cable company competing with American interests on the Atlantic service, for there are now only two concerns the combine and the Commercial Cable Company-which are both American owned,

*Exon if a new British cable company leased one of the spare laes at a heavy rental or laid a new cable across the Atlantic, there is now do prospect of sucessful competition with the American companies,

The reason is that all the chief telegraphic services across Causls are in the hands of two companies working in conjuction with the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Grand Trunk lius, and they are under sproement to take the cable messages of the existing companies.

That is the reason why the British cable companies were obliged to come into line with the Western Union Telegraph Campany, which preferencs for the transmission af ita cablas Boross the Atlantic.
