PRIBON AS HOME.

A friendly critic discusses the problem of our prison syetem in the current Everybody's Wock ty. Once a man has served a long sentence," says-be the ouly life he understands and for which he is fitted is the life of the prisons, In prison they are at homo. There was a man åt Princetown, who had been there since 1874. It was rare for him to be absent for more than a month. Just before my visit by had eavod the life of a warder, and for this three months was knocked off his sentence. Ho regarded what was intended as a reward as an not of gross in-

MARK TWAIN AND THE MELON.

Mark Twain was always at his best as an after diener speaker. This is ons of the glories be told to a company of authors who were en- tertaining him some years ago—lle was very young at the time, he explained, and, the day was an exceedingly hot one. Ashe walked down the street of the village in which he was living he saw cart loaded with melons of most at tractive apt earance. "It is with regret I men- tion," Mark Twain went on," that I was tempted and I fell I grabbed the most likely | looking melon of the lot, and harriedly made my way to the back of the woodshed. I gonged a huge slice out of it and bit it. No sooner had I done so when something within convinced me that I had done wrong. A voice seuned to say, Mark, get up and take that melon right book to where you got it from. It was abcat the groenést melon I had ever tasted, I went back to the cart and carefully replaced it and took a | ripo one in its placo.”

THE ARCHDEACON'S STORY,

Few preachers can tell a more effective atory than the Archdeacon of Liverpool. French ing at Bi. Luke's, Liverpool (says the Church Fmily Newspaper). Archdeacon Madden remarked that just as nothing is so busavoury as a smoking lamp with very little oil, so many people Lave just enough religion to be uns pleasant. Last week," he said, in illustration of this, a little maid came to me and said: Please, Archdeacon, I want a place. I replied: But, my deer, how is this? It is only a few weeks since I found you a good place, a sery nice place, with a good liristian woman "Thou, please, Aroldosoon, said the little maid,

'don't send me to a Christian woman again."""

Into a music shop the other day a young lady entered, and said to one of the shop assistants: Let me see, have you Kissed me by Moonlight'? The assistant blushed, atul looked a little confused as he replied. "I think it must have been one of the other fellows. I'va only come here this week,"

AMUSEMENT IN A CEMETERY.

On the surface of things a cemetery is hardly tho place in which one would look for amuse ment, but owing to the love of the French for Bilog and inscriptions, there is not a little fon to be had out of the country cemeteries in Franco. There are some quaiut insoriptiona in the Paris cometarica, too, of course, but they are

few and far between, On a recent visit to a Norman churchyard, I came across three little geme of unconscious bumour, says a writer iu s London paper. The first was perfect in its paradoxical simplicity, I have only changed the isme... On a stone, with an ornate border, are. these words:

Jean Dubois, President of the League against Mortality in

France,

Aged 24-

When one tome to think of ik perhaps,

there is less quaintness than tras pathos in the

inscription. But the next one I saw is rich

with unconcious humour. It roads:

To my husband,

Who died one your after our marriage, Hla grateful wife. And I think the gem of the collection in the cemetery of Clésy is the following

What tale of village miserlinams and disap. Woodlark, gunboat, 150 tons, 2 guns, 550 h.p --Lient-Comdr. G. F. A. Mulock. Yangime, Submarines:-

"GARLIC THE HEM!” History, repeats itself with a difference, remarks the Pall Mall Gazelle,The story is being revivied, how the resuscitation of the Turkish Navy was hampered by the fact that there were no words in the Turkish dictionary for the various ropes and sails, To get over the dificulty, different regetables were tied to the different ropes, etc., and the sailors received orders to "Hoist the tomato!" "Let

go the

potato !" Now this was tha

very method adopted by Almeida, the Portuguess admiral and discoverer, when be was getting a fleet ready for just such & a descent on the Turkish colony of Mozambique as the Italiano are now making on Tripoli.
