The students of the present day, in the pursuit of new knowledge, have derived some peculiar ideas, which are neither Chiness nor European. They appear to have cast the social relations entirely to the winds. If those who have acquired à amaltering of European knowledge think that every man should live for himself, the sooner they give up that idea the better it would bo for their own good as well as that of their homes and country. All the world over, there are as many ties between rulers and subjects parouts and children, husbande oud wires, masters and papila as there are in China. These tires should be drawn fighter sa the world' goes on instead of being ent asunder. The instances I am going to raste were unheard of in the days of my youth, but in these days of reform, since the old system of education was reorganized, they have been of common occur. A stadent staying abroad wrote home to his father for some money. He said "Dear old friend, socording to the civilized lans I have learned in a civilized country, is I am now past twenty, I have no claim on you nor you on me. But, between man and man enjoy ing equal rights, I can ask you to give me a Ioan, which I will repay when I am in a position to earn money after the completion of my educa. tion." In another case, a girl imbued. with the new. idens went to her parents- nad told them that they must pay her suficient money to furnish a house and buy clothing for herself and her husband, as she was going to marry a man of her selcelian. But nowadays, the so-called modera mon of Chins rather look st it with a favourabla eye. I am sorry for thom, and so are all those who have the welfars of the Chinesa at heart. A good education, how- ever good it may be, without a good character does more harm than good. I particularly with the pupils of this school to remember this.
