THELOSS OF THE "WARATAH,' IN PREPARATION.

A WIERD TALE OF THE FEA

We recently bad some comments based-upon a telegraphic anmmary of the Board of Trade inquiry into the loss of the Waratah, The following report of the Inquiry will prove of interest to many readera:

The inquiry by the Board of Trade into the loss of the Blue Anchor liner Waratah, which was last seen off tité “court” of South Afriòs ̋on July 27 last year, was resumed on the 16th alt. 61 Oszton Hill, Westminister, by Mr. John Dinkinson,

Mr. Noel E. Peck, a director of Messta. Bar- clay; Curle & Co. (the balders of the ship), said that no complaint was received from Messrs. Lund, the owners, after the return of the Waratah from her fra vorage as to the vessel's betsvions at aes, but they did have a complaint from Messrs. Liand with regard to her ability to shift in dook without ballast. Messrs. Lund 200 said the Waratah had not the same stability as the Geelong, and they expressed surprise at not having received plans of the curve lines of the vessel Mesers, Lund asked the builders to take the responsibility for the shifting of the Waratah in deck without ballast. Captain Ilbery (aid. Messrs. Lund) was of the 10 opiniod that the rafah had not the same 10 stability us the Geelong, and the contract was that the Waratah was to have greater stability. "We must hold you reponsible for anything that may happen, Messrs. Lund wrote to the builders; the responsibility for the vessel's per- formance is entirely with you."

VESSÉL'S STRANDE BEHAVIOUE- Witness heard complaints also of her, rolling, but he did not think mach of that, as he had had previous experience in other ships, The Waratah alarmed him..before she reached Durban. On leaving Adelaide it. was fine, but it became somewhat rough, and the boat rolled ins disagreeable and alarming way. She remained s long time on her aide sa if she could not recover her equilibrium. When she did get upright she would give a bit of a jatkaas a consequence of which several passengers had bad falls. Witness made enquiries of his cabin steward about the roll, and the steward said, 'She can roll when she likes.

"As we got near Durban," witness continued, "I was talking about the roll to another passen ger who had been a milor. We walked forward along the promenade deck and watched the ship pitching. the seemed simply to plonghi through the waves, and when one very big ware struck ber, my friend aid lie had never seen any ship I came to the behave in the way she did. decision to leave the ship about ten days before we arrived at Durban.

Witness added that several passengers, some of whom had only booked to Darban, were thrown down by the jerks of the ship. A lady and a gentleman were walking across the deck in fne weather with a smooth sea with a swell, when s sudden jerk caused them to fall. Witnoes told Several of the passengers that he intended to leave the ship at Durban, as he did not like her.
