BILIOUSNESS.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 1911.

There are many causes of this complaint, but they all spring from a disordered liver which does not properly fulfil its functions, especially in a warm climate, when it becomes sluggish in its action. The bile is turned from its proper channel, and enters the blood, and the person so affected is demoralised throughout his entire system.....

The presence of biliary, poison in the blood upsets the entire digestive system, and is the chief cause of sick headaches. It also causes dull pains -and uncasiness in the right side and shoulder blade, a bitter taste in the mouth, sudden dizziness on rising, spots floating before the eyes, furred tongue, had breath, bowels loose one day and All or any of these constipated the next symptoms may accompany the bilious condition, and while so affected life is scarcely worth living.

THE DIRECTOIZE BLASK No one can have forgotten 'the Bensation erated at Chantilly, about three summers since, when the human mannequins of a dressmoking baziness appeared on the lawn in Directoire gown extreme in out and slashed up the side to display ander garments that were not petticoate The exup skirt was hunted outof the field by ridicule, and we thought we had heard the last of it. But here it is again, revired for evening gowns, However, there is really a petticost for it this time. This garment is not meant to protect the wearer against the inclemencies of weather. It is matte of a chiffon, closely kilted, tho kilts headed with small roses run on with gold or silken thread. The slash of the gown is higher than the kane and in the open space the chiffon petticoat emerges, with its delicate adornments, like a fairy

"A CURIOUS CONTRAST, One of the odd things about the tabe skirt in the narrower it becomes the wider are the skivis of men's overcoats. They set me quite a Con laental amplitude just now. And anyone who walks down Bond-stroot can testify tint the tube skirt grows Browar and narroirer and more difficult to walk in, while the fost of the wearers look larger than over

A little lady contrast with its exiguity,

And yet it is said that some of these uproarious women favour the tube skirt for, their own thought not when an aggre sion bent.

TORTUNES FROM THE AIR.

According to a caloulation made by the Aaro Club of France, a sum exceeding £140,000 Lin been distributed in prize money alone by the promoters of the various flying" meetings. that havo been held in the course of the first thirteen months that elapsed from the time of their institution at Bhejus last year. This caloulation, of course, does not take into account the appearance money" that has been paid to the leading men to secure their presence as un attraction at many meetings-the £4,000 that Latham is said to have received at Blackpool, for instance; the £2,000 promiums that Bleriot received at Prose, of Budapest, at Constsu- tinople, at Berlin, and at other places, and the £3,000 that he recaise for his services on ous single day in Vienna; the £2,000 that was guarantee to Bregi for his Argentine tour and the £3,500 that the unfortunate Dolagrange was offered to compete at Donenetor-but it is safe to asanae that if these sums were included, the sum distributed among flying me in the course of the thirteen months would be shown to be at least a quarter of a million sterling.

The detailed agures are, on this account, somewhat misleading, as the prizes alones have often been for-less than the amount guamntond, or actually paid, regardless of prizes. Lailiam. for instance-leaving out of consideration the results of the few days flying immediately previous to the calculatios, which do not come into this list, and which considerably aitor the figures in a number of cases-has-won £10,482 10, in prizes, though his receipts must have been considerably more; Blériot only £1.680; and Delagrange only £28. It is probable, however, that Faulhat is, from every point of view, entitled to his place at the head of the list. His prize money amounts to £16, 400, which, of course, includes the 10,000 that his earned by his brilliant fight from London to Manchester, Leon Morane, the horo of the Bournemouth The tergown is a comfortable thing on these meeting (where, by the way, no appearance grey December afternoons, when, coming in money was paid, bat an outrance fee was de- from shopping or driving, s fire and the wanded of every competitor, to be refunded tinkle of teacups are exhilarating sighis and when he had flown a purtain distance), comes sounds. some time.

THE TELGOWN UP TO DATE;

TWO KINDS OF TEAGOWN,

There are two different varieties of tesgewa. One is the warm and comfortable garment for late afternoon, as described above. The other, the "start" version, is scarcely distinguishable from the ordinary dinner-gown. This latter is decolleté, and is composed of similar materials to those considered appropriate to evening wear. An example may be quoted. Palest eau-de-Nil satin forms the under-dress Over it, almost covering it, is a tunic of white ninon embroider ed in gold and edged with sable. This is caught on the etionlders immediately above the arma in folds that suggest those of the Greek clifton, and these folds are held by small sable heads The taulo fails to the knees in front, and lower still at the back, where it is almost as long as the short train Another decolleté teagown in made of old rose velves vailed with a long tanic of black.figured net, embroidered with chalk, white beads, similar to those familiar to us on the Bath Sea Icland embroideries, The sleeves are in the velvet with arrow band of the embroidered A telling note is added by a waistbelt of folded apple green chiffon caught with a clasp of jade and turquoise, tied in front and finished with ends falling low, and caught into tassels of the chalk white beads

THE EVENING COAT,

before many of the thirteen mouths bad passed. for £4,606.".

Apart from Grahame White, the Englishman, rapidly as they are improving, have not been very su casafol. Captain Dickson, certainly, has won £3,444, but Rawlinson, Radley, Gil- mour, and Grace have less than £200 apiece to their credit. Of the Americans, on the other hond, Glen Curtiss, the winner of the Gordon- Bennat Cap at Rheims last year, is down for £2,000, Johnston for £1,900; and Draxel for £1,680.

***Going through the list haphazard, and pick. ing out the more familiar names, we find that the Comte de Tainbert's prize money amonuts to £2,496; Aubran's to £2,452; Wagner's to £2,283; Oliealegor's to £2,040 Blériot's to £1,680; Audemar's, whose frequent tumbles with his "infuriated dragon by the Santos Damont Demoiselle, leave him little time for actual competition, to £844, Christinons' to £751.10.; and that of de Lesseps to £540. Santos-Dumont himself, who is more inclined for experiment than for competitiou. has only £63 to his credit. I would be juteresting, if it were possible, to see the other side of the account, and to know what the expenses of the successful men have: been. But, though this cannot be calculated, it safe to say that every man whose prizes with is appearance mousy, or other profits, added to them, of course-mount to less than £1,600, is net, out of pocket, in scue cases to a very great extent. At a rough calentation it is estimated that a "fiying man who devotes himself to his Work must spend at least £200 n theuth, and receipts must necessarily, be large to make the business profitable.

A

A saperlatively beautiful sud olaborate. garment is the evening cost of the present season. Nothing is considered too good nor too costly to be lavished upon its adornment, and the materials of which it is made are of the most expensive, the finest velvets, the silkiest of satins, and the richest of soft brocades, the patterned silks, and broché gauzes. A lovely coat is made of biscuit-coloured broché gauze patterned in Saxo blue, lined with white atie, trimmed with gable and fuished with a sailor collar of fiue Alençon edged with the far. The sleaves bars each their lace and fur. This fashion of lace collar offers a means of utilizing pieces that have base lying by, lining them with Bilk that preserves them, or chiffon that both preserves and embellishes, and adding a line of fur or of black ruched chiffon as a set-off against the creamy tone of the laco it borders.

STOLE AND HUFT

The velvet stole ani muff lived with antia in a dangerous rival of far. One of these in mole colour is harmonious with any costume and can be lived with satin of a shade to match or contrast with that of the toilette. For in stance, with one of the purple suits now in so much favour the stole could be lined with satin to match, or if preferred, in a paler note of the same key. A charming effect is made with a rose coloured frieze to have the mole-coloured- stols and muff lined with a deeper rose, the shade modified by a veil of gray chiffon which serves to protect the satin, and can be very readily renewed. Blue, too, always looks well with gray, and the Royal blue now so much worn really needs a subduing influence of the kind.

A PRETIT BTENING GOWNS AN Dining at the Empress Club & tall and hand. some dark-haired young bride received many aimiring looks in her lovely gown of whits satin and tunic of white ne embroidersi closely with green bagles and whity jewelling. This was carried up over the Aboulders in those long lines crossing the figure which give & classimal effect. The white satin skirt was bordered with a band of green satin, not only an artistic addition, but also useful la protecting the white frem the dust it so readily receives. Green silk stockings and satin shoes te ustel, com- pleted a very pretty toilette.

ANOTHER CHARMING TROCK. Amber mon over wisteria mauve, with a band of oxydised trimming as horfler, compose, poetic mihon. The iron is in the form of a costy edged with anble in a narrow line. The fronts are very astrow, and the back is semi-fitting. The airy way in when this floats about the figure of the wearer
