in two months.

2 West View, Cottingham, Nr. Hull,

Dear Sirs, I beg to tender you my deep gratitude for the benefit I have derived from Angier's Emulsion. Last July I was taken seriously ill with congestion of the lungs and was much run-down, my weight being reduced to 10 st. 5 lb. My doctor ordered me to take a course of Angler's Emulsion, and now after two months' treatment I am able to return to work well and strong and my weight has increased to 12 st. 7 lb. I have taken altogether seven bottles and now feel like a man ought to feel, well and able, prepared for anything.. Again thanking

MEASURING BULLET FLIGHT. The spoed of ville ballots can be determined by the improved method of Crants with such precision that the error is estimated not to excead one foot per second. A series of electric sparks at the rate of 5,000 per second lights up the ballet as it posses a horizontally, pivoted rotat. ing drum covered with a photographic film, and the distance apart of the images formed on the film show the bullet's volcaity, the frequency of the spark and the rate of the dram's revolution being known. To make measurement oasier a glass ruledivided into millimetres is photograph ed with the bullet at each spark. This reduction of speed by air friction ja shown from the lessened space apart of images of the ballet on a second drem, and the lag of the image of the second gives the time of flight between the two. Spo- cial arrangement is made for synchronizing the drums and identifying the iinages on each A pendulum contact breaker closes the electric cir- ouit that fres the rifle, and ents off the current except during the minute fraction of a second in which the bullet is passing the drum.

MPRAYED METAL FILMS...

The new spraying process of depositing metal filme, the invention of U. Schoop, of Zurich, seems to be adapted to a wider range of appli. sations than any other method of producing protective coatings. The electrolytic process conts fron and other metals with a covering of gold, ailver, nickel, copper er zine, and has come into extensive use for plated goods and for electro tppos used in printing. Trou is also protected from the atmosphere by galv. nizing, or dipping into molton zine and by tinning in a bath of molton tin. Sherardizing is the improved process of Cowper-Coles, and gives a bountifully adherent deposit of zine on heating iron articles in contact with zine to about 200 dog. €,, or more than 200 deg. below the melting point of zino, In the Sohoop process, the metal for deposit is liquefied and sprayed as a fine mist upon the surface to ba. coated. Compressed nitrogen or other inert gas may be used to produce the fine spray, and, while the molten metal must comal from the nozzles at a temperature of sovera hundred degrees, the mist itself is found to be not hotter than 40 deg. to 60 deg. C. The .projected particles strike with such force.. however, that they are welded together into a homogeneous costing. Varions metals may be deposited, and the coolness of the mist makes it practicable to cost inflammable substances, such as paper, wood, celluloid and war. The coating is harder than films produced by rolling. Among numberless applications enggested are the cont ing of wooden seroplane propellers and of bal. loon envelopes, it being possible to cover the latter with a gas-tight aluminum film scarcely more than 1,000 of an inch thick.

A. POWERFUL MOTOR..........

The hoge electric motor made at Stafford, Eng., weighs nearly 200long tons, has a ventilated commutator 25 feet long and 12 feat in diameter and with a direct current of 960 volts will yield 10,000 horae-power. The voltage can be raised to 14,000, whos 15,000 horse-power will be developed at 90 revolutions per minute. The machine is designed for a 36-inch cogging and finishing mill, and for rolling 5,400 pound stee ingots into reils at one operation.

The era of smokeless cities is found by Peter Fyfe, chief sanitary inspecter of Glasgow, to be almost in sight. If the smoke came chicfy from factory chimneys, se has been supposed, remedies are already at hand, but experiment last year showed that the waste gasos from 40 household chimneys equal in enbic feet those of an average factory chimney, and to prevent this loss some new replace or some smokeless fuel. must be awaited. The saving of factory smoke is an economicat as well as sanitary gain. Complaint having been made of smoke from four boilers of the Glasgow Sewage De partment, a well-known smoke-preventing plang was applied to three of the boilers in October, 1908 and for comparison the same kind of fuel was used in the corresponding months of 1907 and 1908. The actual saving of money for the seven months was $1,100 All smoke was pre. rested, all steam required was raised in three boilers instead of four, and there was an increase of 240,000,600 gallons in the sewage pumped.. The smoke-consuming apparatur cost about $1,000 for each boiler, requiring practically no repairs. A cheaper fuck is now used, and this increases the evring.
