Numerous wells, both public and private, haye become dry on account of the prolonged.drought, in spite of restrictions issued by the Coupoil against the indiscriminato removal of water from the island, making it a serious question for the health of the Settlement, to say nothing of the inconvenience caused to all. The Council has endeavoured to cope with the situation by sinking additional public walls; this hau cost a considerable amount of money, but only one hasproved a suoceas, and oven this cannot be really so considered at the present time, owing to the fact that during a grostor portion of the day it is so taxed that no water is available. The question of meeting this state of affairs was discussed at numerous meetings of the Council and finely, failing, no othar solution of the problem, we invited a Japanese artesian well expert to come over from Formosa and advise us whether or not an artesian well could be successfully sunk on the island. This party pont a week with us and went over the ground carefully with our Captain-Superinton- dent of Police, and eventually reported that in his opinion an arterian well could be successfully sunk at almost any point on the island, and that its maximum depth would be 1,800 feat." The Council's purpose as that the most promising site would be sel ested for the well and if it was a failure in all probability the artesian well scheme would have to bo abandoned, as if water was not found there it would be hardly likely elsewhere. Then in that event some other scheme would have to be put forward.
