POSTPONING THE EVIL DAY
I have spent many years in England, America, and in other foreign countries. I am
groat admirer of England, a lover of her inett-HOW-GERMANY VIEWS THE FAR EAST TREATY," tntions; friend of English liberty of thought and action. Ioan, therefore, say frankly in my opinion you have not many generations to con- tinue as the mistres of the soas.
ENGLAND THE NURSERY.
We bring up our young men with the despite understanding that they know something of the wide world before shall they take up the threads of business at home. Therefore we send them to England, to France, to America, to the Far East, fecting them in their farious callinge. Bloomsbury and South Hampstead are perfect lor German commerce. There cur young mon learn their English, and in your City they have unfolded to them the intricacies of your business methods, which it will be their task thereafter to combat. When they have finished they come home to Germany or go strond as the representatives of German houses, thus laying deeper the foundations of Germany conquest of the world. Your English boys do not come to us to learn our
our methods. Thorofore we have the upper hand of them in the end,
Wherever you go, north.
east, west or south, you find Germans. A quarter of a century ago the mly outlet for our surplus population was the United States of America, and thers my countrymen flocked in millions. We now sut out the United States because the second genera tion there becomes American and the third rojects us altogether, so that there remain
only
a
the German names, and these in a larga pro- portion are altered to suit the Americanised notions of the German's descendants. But in the rest of the world Germany is the predomi cant foreign Power.
South America, which has hitherto been divided between Spanish and Portu- guese speaking peoples, owes ita advance to German enterprise and German trade. The merchant at Rio no longer thinks of London as the only market. He works with Hamburg or Antwerp, and to all intents and purposes Antwerp is a German port. Chili, on the other side of the Andes, is more or 166a in
in the hands of Germany.
China, which has offered England for years a welcome in commerce, slowly bat aurely dov eloping German tendencies. We are instructing and absorbing her nommeres. Even in the Straits Settlements, which are English, German trade is developing amazingly, Australia, gives, we an immense revenue every year. Australia le British to the core, but if you will look in r directory of Sydney or Melbourne you will find that the great houses have German names.
SOUTH AFRICA.
Our young men of commerce spread themselves over South Africa from town to tows waving the net that will eventually bring the trade to us. Our steamship lines. compete seriously with yours, and because we study the convenience of our customers irrespective of their nationality, we have succeeded in gaining the confidence of the travelling public as well as the shipping public Look at any of the German liners that go along the East Coast of Africe to the South, The majority of the pleasure travellers are English, the majority of the business travellers are Germans.
It is a matter of pride to us, as it may be a source of bitterness to you, to feel that the principal line feeding your East African possessions flies the German flag.
Come home, to Belgiam. In Antwerp hear nearly as mach German to-day as you you hear do French. The Flemish people have discovered that it is to their interests accially and com. mercially to study German. They do not stady English. In Holland it is the same, Denmark, which lives on England, is growing fat on England, and feeds you with the things that you ought to grow yourself, hates us Gormans with an indescribable hatred, and yet wo are slowly but surely making our impression on the Danes.
EVERYWHERE.
We are forcing nearly overy Russian business mab to speak German or go under; and when w have finished business we overrun Italy, Switzerland, Egypt, and Algiers with out plea sura seekers, at the places where once the proud Englishman was wont to hold sway.
Now, what does all this mean? It means that Germany is the coming Power. It means glamor ity and night, and yet you will not timt
at you may build ships until every shipyard in Scotland, and Ireland resounds with
the hammer aveceed.
If unfortunately, it should come to the arbitrament of war, you might defeat us at Sea. Germáns doubt it, but even then we Wool will over come to this But should it, hope unfortunately, mean a conflict, you might bring to our knees for a year or two; but in the background of the world there are millions of Chermans ready to take ap the threads of com- merce so rudely torn by the shock of war, and to weare again the great fabric of German power and influence throughout the world.
Think it over.
