use and the oritical faculty of Hippocrates. Their works abound in nexatives of fasts which they state they have either witnessed ar heard of from good authority, A gentle man of the year 323 nc. is gravely reported to have lived for 40 days on the smell of hot bread and honey. Haller records a fast which he states lasted for three yeam; but this record is entirely solipsed by that of a poor geatlêman, who, on socount of conjugal linity, is report ed to have lived alone for 15 years, taking neither food ́vor drink. Hermolas, however, must be awarded the victor's crown, as he is hold to have lived on air alone for 40 years.

RELIGION AND HYSTERIA.

It is not so much in relation to madicine as to religion that fasting in the early times becomes prominent. The old Eastern religions had their fasting periode, just as they had their feastings, In many instances fasting became actually a part of the religions ceremony, and in this connection many extraordinary cases of endurance have been recorded In quite recent times the case was reported of a religions mendicant of the Jain caste, who as a penance fasted for 93 days. This and similar esses may probably be regarded as casos of self-hypnotism, where the attention is diverted from the physical beads by concentra tion of the psychical powers.

In spite of the growth of seepticism many marvellous fasts have been described in com- paratively recent times. Most of the wild tales have bean related in connection with the so called starring girls-e form of bysteria; but these on thorough examination kave been proved to be frands. In one notorious case, where no food was said to have been taken for 14

years,

the subject was fed by her daughter in sororal different ways; for example, when she washed her mother's face she used towels wet with soap, milk, etc. She atec conveyed food to her mother when she kissed her."

VITERBIS CASE,

Frotably, however, the most extraordinary fast which has been recorded in modem times is that of Antonio Viterbi, advocate, who, on account of a murder, in a vendetta in 1821, was condemned to death. NOTE. This mixture is pleasant to the taste As he did not wish his family name to be enllied and worranted free from anything by having one of the members hung or decapi. njurious to the most selleste constitution of other tated, be asked permission to starve himself to sex from intacey to old age, and the Proprietors death.
