BUBBLE WARNINGS..
It is a case of a voice crying in the wilder- ness to say anything critical in the matter of With raw rubber shares and promotions.
rubber rising, and the material well under control, the speculaters in rabber shares cau seo no set-back, and will close their eyes to any adverse points, be that concerned with ultimate production, Malayan labour, or what not. The Local Straits newspapers haro long ago. pointed out the ridiculous prices boing paid for estates, and the over-pitalisation and other drawbacks. But it is not easy to indaco caution or much discrimination when the publio if out for a "boom" and convinced itself that it has the chance of a life-time. So that, alongside oredit- able ventures, and a few still loft that are really worth supporting even at present prices, there are many mere swindlers, and the lowest class of city shark is coining money. We would, however, draw attention to a statement by Sir Frank Swettenham, the late Governor of the Straits Sottlemonts, to a new rubber journal, the Bubber World, He thinks that there are too many promotions, many that none but a lunatic would support. Over-capitalisation, extravagant prices for estates, labour difficulties, shortage of skilled supervision, these are some of the dif culties And Sir Frank urges that recently. established companies will only be kept going with diffionlty, and badly managed and greatly. over-capitalised concerne must inevitably collapse when the period of enormous production arrives, in a few years' time. It has all been said before. by local authorities, but it has fallen an dasť ears, and maybe Sir Frank Swettenham's words of wisdom will have a like fate.
RUBBER DEVELOPMENTS IN JAPAN. The British Commercial Attaché at Yoko- hama states that during the closing months of 1909 there was a sudden development in Tokyo and Yokohams of the use of solid rubber tyres for jinrikishas, and there is lit le doubt but that the fashion will spread to nearly all the large towns in the provinces. The price naturally varicé considerably according to the quality, but it appears that a pair of wheels with tyres costa from 25 yen to 34 yen, and the tyres alone from 14.50 yen to 18 yea a pair. It is estimated that these tyres will last two years, but as they havo only been in use a short time it is impossible to judge. On the other hand, British imported tyres used by the brokers have lasted for over ten years similar tyres now cost 30 yen.
Most of the tyres now coming into use are manufactured locally, though some few are [257 Imported. Al the Japanese firme making tyros

KAPAK RUBBER.
At the ordinary general meeting of the Karuk Rubber Company held on April 5th, Mr. C. T. Sidgwick explained that they were meating within three months of the last meeting, and this had been rendered necessary because they had decided to close the company's financlai year at the end of December instead of Septem ber. Consequently, in order to conferm with the Companies Act, that second mesting had to be hell, What he had to tell them was in every way satisfactory. Writing under date March 2.
