SPORTING NOTES.

CRICKET.

The weather continues to worry the cricketing members of the community. Day after day they see that small board which conveys to their intelligence the fact that the Ground is closed, and they wander disconsolately away. The fact that the Shanghai representatives have some good bowling material is a poor consolation; and it really is hard luck that there have not been more opportunities for practice. But old Sol appears to be rising to the occasion and apparent, ly recognises the seriousness of the thing, and

due weather is going to be the order of the day

from now on.

The tast guine on Saturday was unproductive of any sensational cricket, W, H. E. Olivor keeps on improving; in addition to securing second best bowling average he was run out wher within 3 of the highest score, a very creditable performance. Tarner struck some of his old form, his score (51) being quite in keeping with his "previous seasons' success. Capt. Garnett continuos to get wickets with his tricky deliveries. He appears to break from both sides of the wicket and varies both pace and pitch. Bird got two wickets, but it is probable that a wicket with more life in it will sait bis deliveries better. Capt. Baird and Pearce arcboth in good form with the willow, and Capt. Beasley is kooping his end up with his usual cantions play. Edwards scored quickly, but he uppoared to take too many chances with balk on the off. Capt. Chapham and Claxton made a good stand at the finish of their side's innings. While on the subject of probables it will not be out of place to mention Power's 49 at the Valley. He is undoubtedly playing a good game this season, and it is to be hoped he will have an opportunity of playing on the Club ground before the final selection takes place.

It is quite like old times to see the Hongkong Cricket Club "A" team cone strolling along about six strong at the Valley. One might again look forward to such players as B. 0. Else, A. N. Other, etc., appearing in the person of number two or three ground coolio. One cannot help thinking that there must be a sad lack of organisation when a club like the premier oricket club cannot get a fall team to turn up at the Valley for a League match. The Royal Engineers had no difficulty in heating them, and now stand at the bead of the League tablo. It is probablo they will do well this season, but are hardly good enough to win the Shield.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH, 1909.

Watts was in a scoring mood-on Saturday against the sappers, when he scored four of the xx goals for his team. The performance of the gunnera calls for little semment, except that they did more than was expected of them in defeating the sappers by four olear goals.

MALARIA CONFERENCE.

THE VALUE OF QUIFINE AS A PREVENTIVE. There was a full attendance at the Malaria Confermos at Viceregal Lodge, Simla, on the 12th ult, where the Viceroy weloonied the delegates in a short speech in which be pointed out the importance to the sountry of the matter they had assembled to discuss and the Colonel Leslie, then read his paper, which main features of the problem to be solved. showed in detail how this matter now stands. question of preventive messures, which he classed as: (1) the examination of mesquitos; (2) the In the course of his remarks he dealt with the prevention of mosquito bites; (5) the adminis intration of quinino,

The sappers with the strongest available team in the fileled failed to make any impression on their opponents, but with the arrival of the troopship, which is expected here on Thursday, they hope to be in a position to introduce some now blood, which is badly needed.

The second divizion have been unfortunate having as many setbacks with the arranged matches, but now that the ball has been sot a- rolling no doubt everything will run smoothly.

Thn B. O. C. wore certainly the better toam in the match played on the Club ground, and am sure that the fault of solishness, so apparent on the forward line on Saturday, will soon be remedied.

The Lusitano have a well-balanced tenin, and with a little practice will give a good account of themselves before the season ja far advanced,

83 Coy. have won both matches so far, and, judging by their present form, are likely to account for B. O. C. at Lyaman on Saturday,

Two points were rained on Saturday which would lend one to suppose that the rules of the League are still in need of revision. The first was the case of Kew, who played goal for the Cinb on Saturday after being advertised to play for Kowloon in a former league match. The other was the case of Baptista, who it seems was registered to play for B.O.C. and Lasitano, and went to the Valley on Saturday afternoon That cases of this prepared to play for either. kind will crop up in the best managed associa tions, no one will deny, but I think a lot of trouble would be saved if playing for à team was the only registration necessary.
