this evidence of the master's previous experienc in the locality and the statement on the sailing directions, the court did not fool justified in imputing negligence to him. Captain Downie, in the course of his evidence, said he had no trouble whatever with the Chiness crow.

ORDER FOR £360,000 LOST.: Some little time ago it was sundanced that the Greenock and Grangemouth Dockyard boar pany had contractel to build fro steamore for the Russian Volunteer Fleet, at a cost of £360,000. This order was hailed with great antisfaction at Greenock as likely to

pravite much-needed work for shipyard hands. It is true that the price, including more than £2,000 for extras in respect of each vessel, was very low, and that the acceptance of the soutract certainly meant no profit, and would possibly leave a loss to the builders. But ship constructors "dialiko haring their plant idle, and the order, for what it was worth, was doubtless regarded as likely

to be useful in tidings over til shipbuilding izproves. In way event, the larger part of the £360,000 would have gone in wages, and world have enabled hundreds of familles to keep the wolf from the door this winter.

and to work under more proitable coadi tions. Cu the other hand it has byon possible to fix, the anus subsidies at a gure, which will rapresent an immediate economy to the State of about, one million franes (£40,000) without conating my future profits to which it may become entitled. The Sate receives from the company certain advantages, notably the institution of a monthly service between: Mar- sailles and Indo-China, an increase of speed on the chief lines as the new ships come into us, and the organization of a system of pansiosa for the workmen employed at the company's dockyard.
