GERMAN CHAMPAGNE PRODUCTION.

more

From the official statisties of last year's production of champagne in Germany. Just issned, it would appear that the production aud export of champagne is marked by a moderate but steady advance. Thus in the year 1905 more than 11 million bottles of champagne were produced as compared with ust quite 11 million the year before. It is interesting to note that the hors consumption of champagne in Germany is greater than that of France, through which these wines were first made known to the world. Whereas three years ago in France only 71 million bottles of clampagne wer

were consumed, the

ta consumption in Germany amounted than 10 million bottles of Guru sparkling wiara and 1 million bottles of French chant- pagne. so that about 4 willion more were This Consaned in Germany than in France. is a clear indication of the fact that since the production of sparkling wines has become a flourishing industry in Germany, the enjoyment of such wines is to longer exclusivoly confined to the richer classes, for otherwise this increased consuraption would be inexplicable. "It is probably not merely by chance" says one writer, that the Gormans and the British are the nations that drink relatively large quantities of champagne
