Kirby, the British auturalist, states that soteral largo Caterpillars of the families Cossidae ad Hepialida are known to be infested by various parasitic fuugi of the genus Cordyesps, Fries, which convert the whole of the caterpillar into woody substance, and then sprout from it to à length of several inches. The infested larve, usually growing to about four inches, live like others watil ready to assume the papa stato. Then they bury themselves in the ground, die, and the fungus sprouts upward, usually from the neck of the caterpillar, some times acquiring the length of nearly a foot, and rising up from the ground. Very rarely two, or even thrce, of these filaments may | sprout from a single caterpillar. The natives eat the plants, which have the favour of a nut, and also burn them for use as colouring matter for their tattooing.
