The Attorney-General in opening the case, said that the first charge against the prisoner was that of causing a false trade description to be applied to dross opium in imitation of the Opinn Farmer's lubel. They were placed there without the untherity of the Opium Farmer and for the purpose of deceiving the public and inducing them to believe that the opium which the defendant was selling was opium that had come through the Opium Farmer. If he applied that false description to the opion he was guilty of an offence against the Merchandise Marks Act. LOSS OF A STEAMER NEAR AMOY.

News was received at Shanghai last Saturday that the China Navigation Co.'s steamer Hoong. he had foundered at sea, in Chimme Bay, noar Amoy. The chief engineer, Mr. Hamilton, was missing, but all the other Europeans on board were reported safe. There was some loss of life amongst the Chinese, but to what extent was not yet krown. The C. N. S. Woochow left Hongkong for the scene of the wreck,
