THE HORRORS OF HOME-· COMING.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, THURSDAY, MAY 19′′, 1904.

The Daily Mail has recently opened its columns to a correspondence on "The Horrora of Home-coming," a title not calenlated to cheer exiles in distant lamb. The vituperation of the writers is maluly concentrated upon the refresh ment stall at Dover Pier. It is the size of small railway boolestall, and cups of coffee and soup are handed out through an open window.

The Daily Mail, with its usual enterprise, send a representative to imvel to instituts comparisons between the arrangement nude for passengers at English and Frouch ports. His report is not very satisfactory read- trast betwoon the miserable shelters and refresh- ment stails províkelat Newhavor. Folkestone, and Southampton, as well as nt. Dever, and those existing across the Channel, in liating, as all travellera know. -One has exly to com- pare the spacious and admirable buffet at Calais, with the rude hovel that exists on Dover Pier, to realise that "they do thes things better in Franes. As a gate of Eng land, Doror is the most execrable place con. ceivable. It is a marvel that its shortcomings have been toleruteil so long. The Times of India supports the Daily Mail and says:-One wanderer can recall how, after journeying i many lands, be and a companion gazed upon Dover's memoried cliffs" from the decks of the smallest und smeltiest of the Belgian stoamers plying from Ostend. If Scott land had their subsequent experience, he would have revised his celebrated verses about the man with son so dead, who never to himself bath sail," and so on. The steamer was crowded to excess. On arrival at Dover Pier they stepped ashore in drenching rain. There was no shelter nyailable. Thair luggage was dumped down on the stones, and the Customs officers" examined it with no better protection than was afforded by an umbrella. There was no opportunity for obtaining food. The London. Chathain, and Dorer Railway Company. faithful to its reputation, hed failed to

provide sufficient couches. The two travellers had to erowd with ten others into u third-class con- partment. The train, named by some humorist a "boat express," stopped at nearly every station on the way to London. It was so badly

We do not know what are the precies duties of a Lort Warden of the Cinque Ports, but we hope that when the new Lord Warden lands at Dover ho will receive warmer welcome than is accordel to most of his countrymen returning from exile. Thore is room for reform in this particular Cinquo Por, as in India. In the wildest parts of Manchuria and Trans-Baikalin the railway station buffets wore, prior to the war, infinitely superior to those as any of the South Coust ports. At any station on the

it Siberian and Manchurian Railways possible to obtain excellent meals at any hour of the day or night. But the only port of arrival in England-we speak of the South Coast which makes any respectable attempt to enter for the comfort of passengers from abroad, is Plymouth. While we are on this subject, we call attention to the disgraceful confusion which usually attends the departure from Char ing Cross of passengers by the Indian Mail for Brindisi. As travellers going on a long journey, they are usurdly encumbered with a considerable amount of luggage. But although a special train awaits their at Calais, und although their numbers are always approximately known beforehand, no attempt is made to provide them with reserved accommodation as far as Dover. They have to crowd in anywhere, fighting their way through mobs of people seeing friends off on the perilous journey to Paris. The senes at Charing Cross on a Friday night. would not be tolerated for an instant in any Continental station. The defect we have pointed ont is not the fault of tint much-ainged institution, the Peninsular and Oriental Company. We under stand that representations have been repeatedly made from Leadenhall Street asking for reserved accommodation for passengers by the Indian Mail. The railway company persist in refusing Hating doue their best to make the arrival travellers as unconfortable as possible. they vindiente their regentation for consistency by ereating discomforts on their departure al It is not until the calm and orderly quietude of Calais Station is mached that peace supervenes once more. And yet there are people who still wonder why Englishmen go abroad! In this respect, at least, they go abroad to learn the art of travel.
